Why is it that there are more girl baby clothes than boys at the stores? So, from observation of many stores, such as, Target, Babies-R-Us and USA Baby I have found that there are more options for baby girls. There are not as many choices and options for baby boys, that portion of the store is usually very small. Any ideas as to why this is? These are all great ideas...keep them coming!! Has anyone thought about this before when walking through clothing stores? Am I the only one?
any awesome deals.. steals.. on baby stuff? We all know that sometimes we run across a deal that is amazing and can not be passed up.. Like I found a Graco quattro tour deluxe stroller for $49.99 new from a USA baby store, the stroller normally runs around $130.. I would post the link but they are all gone and do not have it listed anymore.. Anyone ran across these type of deals on some baby stuff? I'm hoping that over the Christmas holiday I will run across a really good steal on a nice crib and changing table. Also does anyone know of any black Friday sales on cribs?
Which store has the largest selection of baby gear, especially organic and made in the usa items? If you'd care to recommend your favorite specialty website, that's okay, but I'm really looking for a big store that has a selection beyond the normal Made in China fare. I noticed that Babies R Us sells some organic bath and bedding products. Are there others that are even better? The reason I want a large store instead of a website is that my friend recently registered on MyRegistry, which pulls from various websites, and she got very little of what she registered for. It was basically me and one other person who bothered to use the website; everyone else went to their favorite chain store and chose for themselves. Older relatives probably didn't even have computers. Obviously, my friend didn't complain, and I know etiquette does not dictate that shower guests must abide by a registry, but I would like to at least increase my chances that I will get the items I need most.
How to get a store to accept a return on a special order item? We purchased some baby furniture from USA Baby. We selected items that were displayed on their floor however they didn't have the color we wanted in their back room. So we had to wait 7 weeks for our order to come in. Order came and we are very unhappy with the quality. They want to charge us a 30% restocking fee to return the items however I don't think that is fair because it isn't our fault that the crib is scratched and damaged. Additionally none of the paperwork we received when we ordered stated that this was final sale and that there was a restocking fee. Has this ever happen to you? If so, how did you get the store to accept your return? Thanks for the help!
Where can I find teething toys MADE IN USA? Where can I find teething rings/toys that are made in the USA? Every store (Walmart, KMart.....) have a variety of teething rings but they are all made in China. I will not buy any baby items that are made in China. I want some teething toys that are filled with water that I can put in the refrigerator.

Baby guppies, not such babies anymore. How much can I sell them for? I have guppies that I've been raising. They reproduced, and the first baby bach is 5-6mounths old. One pet store says they will by them, but they need an offer. I'll live in PA., USA. Our tax is 6%. I was thinking for selling them 10-25cents each. I have mostly girls. I feed them with the best food on market, baste on its nution value. The water is perfect.

Price of goods USA made versus China made? How much does a store have to pay for an item from china versus an item made in the USA.. I am getting wary of products from China as are many others I speak with. If a toothbrush sells for $3.00 retail here how much did it cost from a supplier from China versus a USA supplier? What about the baby formula that has made the babies ill? How does the price to the wholesale supplier compare for comparable products? Does the US not have the factories to produce our own items or is the cost difference really that great?
retailers recall Simplicity bassinets ? WASHINGTON - Eleven more retailers have recalled Simplicity bassinets, bringing the total to 17 that have decided to recall the infant beds, which are linked to the deaths of two babies The Consumer Product Safety Commission said Wednesday that 11 additional retailers are pulling from their shelves the "close-sleeper/bedside sleeper" bassinets because the products pose a strangulation hazard. Those retailers include AAFES, Amazon.com LLC, Bed Bath and Beyond/BuyBuyBaby, Burlington Coat Factory, Chelsea & Scott LTD (OneStepAhead), CSN Stores, Fingerhut Direct Marketing, Kohl's Department Stores, ShopKo Stores Inc., Sweet Pea Decor, and six stores of USA Baby. The agency first announced on Aug. 28 that Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Toys "R" Us Inc., Kmart Corp., Big Lots, Target, J.C. Penney have recalled the products. The recall affects nearly 900,000 bassinets. In recalling the Simplicity 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 convertible bassinets, the retailers have agreed to provide a refund or store credit to consumers who return the product to the store where they purchased it, CPSC said. A 6-month-old girl from Shawnee, Kan., was strangled on Aug. 21 when she became trapped between the bassinet's metal bars. In September 2007, a 4-month-old girl from Noel, Mo., became trapped in the bassinet's metal bars and died. The Simplicity bassinets have metal bars spaced farther apart than federal standards allow. Julie Vallese, a CPSC spokeswoman, said consumers can tell if their Simplicity bassinet is recalled if it has removable fabric that is fastened by Velcro. SFCA Inc., the company that purchased the assets of Reading, Pa.-based Simplicity Inc. earlier this year, has refused to recall the products. SFCA maintains that it is not responsible for products previously manufactured by Simplicity.
Any good baby clothes stores? Cuteeeee ones? Helloooo :) I am having a baby around November 2nd-6th. I am nervous, but I have decided to look at the bright side! And clothes is on my list :) Is there any websites, or national stores (I'm from USA) that sell superrr cute ones? I had an ultra-sound today at noon, and the doctors are 99.9% positive its a girl, because of a good ultra sound thingy. I LOVE colors! I want my baby girl to be colorful! I want nice priced clothes though, not designer junk for a billion dollars. I am 15, so I am saving. But I have a lot of money under my mom's care from when my dad died. And I could use it, but hopefully cheap, not cheap, nice priced, good quality, cute colorful girlie clothes! :D Thanks! :D Yup 13 weeks! It was a high resoulution (excuse the spelling) ultra sound. A good parent can be at any age, and I have been told not to tell off the b*tches who say that to me. It just works me up. She is MY baby, and I have a boyfriend, together for 3 years. and my dad was a brain surgeon who died when i was 6. i got some money, but ALL of his money went to me because he divorced my mom. My mom is the keeper of my money, but its a lot. They are (were) both surgeons. I'm FINE with that. And I have a job. So please, I WANT to think of clothes. I'm not until 18, but my mother and I think there may be a way around the papers that I could have it for emergencies.
Baby Furniture that won't drain our savings? We are expecting, and recently just started looking for a crib and dresser set....but are finding that good quality comes at too high of a price for us. We've looked at USA Baby and Babies R Us, but can't seem to find anything that won't cost a fortune! We looked at Target and Walmart, but we're not sure that their products will last as long as we'd like. We're looking for a convertible crib so it will also be a toddler bed and eventually a twin bed. Does anyone know of decent stores or websites where we can find a quality furniture set for less than $700???
Calling all mothers and good baby namers!? I am scared. I am 27 years old and I got married when I was 25. I just went to the doctor 1 year ago, they told me I couldn't give birth on my own. So we tried fertility treatments. 2 months ago, i went to the doctor again and he said I was pregnant with sextuplets! This is our first time having a baby... or babies. We went to the store and got 12 packs of diapers, 15 pacifiers, 12 bottles, and some clothes and toys. If they all live, they will only be the 15th set in the USA. I am terrified and I wont do selective reduction. Do any of you have advice? And are these good names? (I am having 4 girls and 2 boys.) 1. Alexis Clair 2. Aaron Joshua 3. Emily Kayla 4. Maya Joelle 5. Daniel Jacob 6. Leila Rose (pronounced Lay-la.) I hope you guys have tips! Thanks! Thankyou to all of you! I may spell Layla like this. its prettier. I think im gonna get more bottles... thanks! excuse me "shut up obber", but when i found out 2 months ago... I WASNT TWO MONTHS PREGNANT! I was already 3 months pregnant. so now im 5 months pregnant.
Stores just for toddlers?? What are some stores that are just for toddlers? You see stores just for babies such as Babies 'R Us, USA Baby, etc. Are there any stores just for toddlers...not just clothing stores but everything toddler such as clothing, toys, shoes, books, etc. all under one roof. I'm not talking about Target or Wal-Mart either as those are discount stores. I'm seeking stores that just have everything toddler...for kids ages two and up. Preferably in the United States please...

Would Mexicans support illegal aliens from the USA? I think I’ll go to Mexico and give the people there a show I think I’ll speak my language too, just like illegals over here do I think I’ll steal and cheat and lie, and leave the Mexicans wondering why They pay for me to have a kid, while I work for the contractor with the lowest bid I’ll take the jobs that they don’t want, I’ll invite an uncle and an aunt To live with me and 10 other gringos, we’ll all eat burgers and play us some bingo We won’t pay taxes, they’ll never know, instead we’ll take our pesos to go I’ll pretend English is officially the language of the whole country While I get my free prescriptions filled, won’t Mexican tax payers be so thrilled To know that they are helping me to live in Mexico illegally While their kids stay dumb and go hungry I’ll wave my US flag and demand equal rights While I sell illegal drugs and get their children high as kites They cannot send me home, cause no one wants the job I’ll take And no matter where I roam, I’ll take an ID that is fake So they’ll think I’m really one of them, black hair, suntan and I’ll fit right in Language barrier, not to worry, they’ll hire people in a hurry Who speak the language that I speak, like a parrot with a cracker hangin’ out of it’s beak They’ll speak it in church, they’ll speak it in schools, they’ll speak it in stores while they look like fools Cause fools they are if they let me stay, I’ll be giving them nothing while I’m taking away their culture, their language, their laws to be broken, no I wouldn’t mind being their little token Gringo, oh sing o gringo of your own home land, while you steal food out of a baby’s hand, Oh Mexico is the promised land, full of people who want me to stay, they’ll be sorry if they send me away Who will pick their fruit when I’m gone? Who will the Mexicans have to pick on? Who will take the jobs they won’t, if we greedy, illegal gringos don’t? This is my cynical little poem that I wrote to demonstrate what illegal aliens expect from us but would never offer in their own country. I will never go to Mexico again. I stopped there on a cruise once and spent most of my time under water scuba diving. I can visit poluted beaches and hear Spanish right here in the US, no need to wander across the border. Livin the life, you are pathetic. I read some of your own questions and they are in Spanish. You are in the USA. If you want to speak Spanish you should post your questions in a country that speaks your language. You are the racist for excluding non Spanish people from answering your own stooopid questions. I'd have written my poem about Poland, but I don't think they represent the majority of illegals in the USA. Can't stand the heat? Get outta the spotlight!
Baby Medicine pulled from shelf? What is that old movie with who ends up with a baby who isn't hers, and a boss named Mr. Merlin? I was watching it on USA this Saturday, and it was really cute! It was in black and white. There was this lady who worked in a deparment store that had issues with exchanging stuff, and she ended up with this baby who wasn't hers. Like, she went out dancing, and her boss thought the baby was hers and made her keep it. Her boss's name was Mr. Merlin (I think) and the baby's name was John. At one point Mr. Merlin didn't have a date to a party so he asked the woman to come with him and he bought her nice clothes and she pretended to be Swedish or something??? It was super, super old, and really cute!!!! Any ideas? Yeah, thats it, and at first she thought it was a girl and said its name was Joan, and the land lady knew it was a boy and went "Ohh.. John, how cute"
Question concerning the usa government? The Manhattan project Dr.J Robert Oppenheimer ,government conspiracies was that his real name or was it a fake names ,and or were there a doubles used as a replacement as the true Oppenheimer and have they or do they use doubles, like a Michel Jackson look alike or Elvis Presley look a like or Dolly Patton look alike, you no for replacements,I mean for or as a part of there protection services, mission impossible type of thing USA Government cover ups,to bad there weren't more people that looked resembled & like Einstein they would probably be running Iran right now..or maybe there was just a baby exchange, and everybody ('ss )children got shuffled.what if they Oppenheimer exchanged his name became some like a pharmacist running there own drug store after the war.and went on with there new found life.and replaced him with a fake or a Double, could some thing like this ever happen any where in the world and or what about in United States of America. Some one once asked me so what happen after the war ,What do you think happen.please some one tell me what they think. suspicious minds, I was only kidding i was just wondering what you think.
Why does the USA have so many "free" things from the government? It seems like Americans get offended by this. I've read all kinds of questions, newspaper articles, etc. about it. People get offended for some reason and take a negative, fighting stance. I am baffled why as a citizen of the United States, all I've ever grown up seeing is people getting free stuff left and right. People from another country come over here and get a grant/loan from the government to open businesses that thrive and flourish - yet citizens of the USA seem to have a massively hard time doing that. There is a massive, and I do mean massive amount of people on EBT/Welfare, WIC, Section-8, Medicaid/Medicare who are young people. I'm shocked at how many coworkers I've known who were young people that had stair-step children (2, 3, 4, 5, 6 years old) and seemed to have children just to get more "free" stuff added on by the government. They talk about getting their hair/nails done for hundreds of dollars, wear the best branded clothing, etc. Half of their rent is paid, they always have excellent teeth because they grew up on apparently medicaid and didn't have to pay for a dentist. WIC gives them free milk, cheese, eggs, etc. at the store. EBT pays for an average of $600+ per month for their food. Some get checks from the government to pay their utilities, and the remaining money left they can do what they wish with. All of which seem to have good jobs (oftentimes government or other well-to-do jobs), but claim that they "don't know who the father of the baby is" and seem to get welfare for that reason. They have jobs, they work...they spend the money on themselves and our taxes pay for their children. When my mother was raising me and my brother as a result of the death of my father at 10 years old, we couldn't get welfare. No government assistance. I'm 28 years old and still trying to make enough money to get my smile corrected - because growing up, I had a lot to pay for by working and helping out my family. It kinda pi**** me off that I see people living the life on freebies all the time. EBT/Welfare is said to be broke by 2017, and other programs before that. I'm just wondering why so many people don't object to this as a nation. I know that some people absolutely need these to live and don't make enough money to live - but neither has my family. We had to make it happen. What's becoming of our country?
Where can I buy Aviso yarn? This is for my baby's vest. I really want this kind, but don't seem to find it in any USA stores, even on-line. Please help. Thanks.
What should my baby wear for...? Okay, well I'm engaged so I'm just gonna call them the in-laws. My boyfriend has lived with his sister since he was 10, because he didn't get along with his parents. We just had a baby May 1st. A little girl :) Anyways, they are begging to come see her. I have never met them, and they are planning on moving up here and helping us with the baby. They also said they'd help us get an apartment, so I can't resist. My boyfriend says one thing annoying about them is that they make first impressions, and then keep them. I want my daughter to be dressed adorable and appropriate for meeting her grandparents. She will be three and a half weeks old at the time. Also, It needs to be great. If I haven't said that lol. Not too fancy, not too sloppy. Because I think they might already have a bad impression of us because I'm 15 and hes 16. ANy online stores, or just stores? I live in the USA. I don't care the price, as long as its not like some $300 booties. lol. Thank you :) P.S. If you want to judge, please just don't. I get enough of that. And I asked this earlier and all I got was answers judging. Oh- and it should be about high 70's or low 80's. And people were saying I should be worried about other things more, I have already got everything done and perfect. I just need to get my daughter an outfit. I just want her took look nice. ok?

What do you think would happen if *most* of the men disappeared mysteriously? What if a strange disease took out 99% of the MEN in the world? Pretend it did not affect baby boys under 2 and a small portion of the elderly male population over 70. Do you think the USA could shut down the majority of prisons and gun stores? Would police even be necessary in most places? How do you think life would change and all these women would handle themselves now that they are 99% of the population?
expensive brand name baby car seats or inexpensive? is there really a difference in babies car seats the have ones from 100-400$ anyway,im asking this because,i went to a ''safety council'' place where they give you a new car seat for only 25$ it's a program to help parents with low income to get a seat anyway, the seat is like, ya know those plastic solo cups in they sell in the grocery store its feels really cheap I wanted to just ask for my 25$ & leave but i was shy but i asked the lady if it was safe i told her it feels really cheap(seems dangerous) and I certainly wasnt expecting a fancy one for my 25 or anything like that but a SAFE one?? she said it passed the ''government standards'' HAHAHA but i live in the usa so that doesnt say much they dont exactly care about their people..lol thats beside the point though do you parents find their to be a difference in seats? also,i dont believe it was new, like she said its the law it has to be but this was looked a little dirty and used? AND i cant return it now as they would considered it used even though it was just yesterday? would YOU GUYS believe her that its safe? i mean this is my babies life they dont seem to have much of a standerd for these seats if it passed the government guidelines i mean its really like a plastic cup? geez,if i couls get my 25 back i could just wait a little longer and get a DECENT ONE from babies rus for 100$ im so upset about this they set up organizations that APPEAR to help people but its all politics, theres always a gimmick! what would you guys do?? in my area i was told the police and fire stations no longer do these inspections they said they dont have the time and people for it I cant believe that either, but then again i live in florida so anything goes here!! orphan annie=i cant afford one i am compfortable with IF it was that easy i wouldve purchased one at babiesrus in the first place!!! what does 5 point restarint mean and HOW can i know if i have one?? even if it is,the plastic is sooooooo cheap it cant be good?? btw..the seat is a cosco scenera i just googled it! wow, those jerks charged me more than half the cost of it & its crap!! i wish i knew how to post links so i could show you guys!!
Baby Grace & Madeleine McCann? Btw if you're 'bored' of Maddie please don't read this question & certainly don't answer. - Baby Grace was found in a box in the sea by fishermen. These are similarities between Baby Grace & Maddie McCann. - Baby Grace was wearing white trainers with purple flowers on them and a stripe around the bottom. A photo has seen Maddie McCann wear the same type of shoes. - The box Baby Grace was found in could only be sold in WalMart stores. Gerry McCann had plenty of opportunity to visit WalMart while on his trip to the USA for the 'find Madeleine' campaign. - Baby Grace was wearing clothes by Cherokee. People could buy these clothes in WalMart or Target. The clothes could also have been bought from Tesco in the UK. More information can be found here. http://www.truthformadeleine.com/babygrace.htm this is frm the website above: "Gerry, Kate and others drove to Huelva on August 3, 2007. This was 8 days after Dr. McCann returned from his visit to Washington DC. In his blog he writes about that trip: 'It is exactly 3 months since Madeleine was abducted. Kate and I had an early start as we drove to Huelva, 50Km over the border from Portugal in Southern Spain.' This entry in his blog has perpetuated a myth that Huelva was 50km (30miles) from Praia da Luz. In fact, Huelva is 190km (120 miles) from Praia da Luz. This adds further mystery to a trip so far away from the place of disappearance and on a public holiday." Katie and the first answerer - if you read the website they think that Gerry & Kate could have transported maddie by boat. that is if the kid is maddie.
Where to register? My sister-in-law lives in CA and I (and all our fam) live in NJ. She's 20 weeks preggo and has already registered at babysrus (which is where I registered when I was preggo). Now, she doesn't like any of the bedding there and wants to register at a 2nd place. We've looked at Pottery Barn, Target and USA Baby and she doesn't like anything. Is there anywhere else to register for bedding? Or can anyone suggest a store/website with nice bedding? If she can't register at the particular place, I'll just buy it for her. We found this website www.nurserycouture.com and she likes this one, but its $450!!!! Now, we're not cheap people, but I spent 1/2 that on my own comforter!! And I'll use mine for more than 2 years!! http://www.nurserycouture.com/ProductDetail.jsp?LISTID=5323552807544848641
Where can I buy a polymer ball that holds water for gardening? Recently on the internet I found a website on how to grow a mini bamboo plant and it for a recommendation it said that instead of soil I should use "Water Babies", there is a similar product called the Seven Colored Crystal Boll but I just don't know where to find it here in the USA, preferably in California. If there is any other product that is like it that is sold in a store here in the US I'd greatly appreciate it.
Where is the best place to live in Connecticut? My fiance and I are moving to Connecticut in November. We are about to have a baby girl next year. I have lived in the west coast since I immgirated to the USA. I've heard there are a lot of differences between the East and West coast. I want to know where to live in CT that is the best for the baby and family, such as safety, nearby grocery stores, train station to NYC, and easy to walk around since I will be working from home a lot. Any response is greatly appreciated. =P

Do people from Latin America think of the USA as "forwards?"? For example, the USA, as a industrialized nation, has always characterized Latin America as "backwards," a "third world region", or full of "banana republics." So what do people from Latin America think when they visit the USA? Do they say, "Man, the USA sure is 'forward!'" Here are some complaints people from Latin America might have when visiting the US: 1. Stores always have change! Why in the world would they do that? Chasing down change is a part of life. 2. All the streets are paved! Why!? A little dust never hurt anybody. 3. The soccer fields have grass! Who needs grass to play soccer? 4. People can make unlimited cell phone calls after they pay their bill. Why should they be able to do that? 5. Why do you have to call people before you visit them!? 6. Why do you have to tell people if you are bringing more people along!? Don't they understand that uninvited guests are the spice of life! 7. Why don't homes in the US have gigantic water tanks on top of their homes! 8. Why do the governments make buses and other public transport vehicles pass smog tests!? Who needs a smog test? 9. Why don't 3 people ride on a single scooter or motorcycle? The more the merrier! And why do they have to wear helmets! Helmets make you look so ridiculous! 10. Why do people have to put their babies in car seats? Don't they know that any separation of the baby from the mother leads to psychotic behavior in the future? No wonder there are so many nutcases in the USA! 11. Why do the governments FORCE parents to send their kids to school? Don't they know they could make more money if their kids are out begging for change during school hours? 12. Why do people only party on Friday and Saturday? Don't they know Sunday parties that last until the wee hours of Monday are the way to go? I live in Mexico, too (for the last year). That's why I'm asking this. You're right, LA is a paradise for those with money, but hell for the rest.
What baby item have you purchased that you were so disappointed with? What was it? Did it break? Not last as long as you thought? Not work like you thought? Or, do you have a bad taste in your mouth from a baby item manufacturer? I am over it with NUBY! I have emailed them repeatedly over several months asking about their products. I've had difficulty finding them in the stores(some things that were on their website, but I couldn't find in the stores). I emailed them 3 times asking where to purchase this product. I emailed them 2 times asking where to purchases another product on their website, only to find out it's not sold in the USA.... then why is it on your American website? I emailed them about finding products that were advertised in the pamphlet that came with a bottle I purchased. They never responded. I finally sent them a hand written letter explaining about all the times I have tried contacting them about purchasing their products. I WANT to be their customer, but NO ONE would respond. That letter has never been addressed nor have I received any emails. What the heck kind of customer service is this???? What is your vent?
Any place to rent a crib in USA with crib bedding and charges please? Is there any store to rent a crib and bedding for few months. We have to relocate to uk in 4 months , but until then I need a crib for my 7 month old baby boy. He suddenly started waking up around 12 and or 4am and is wide awake for almost 2 hours . He eats his milk and still no sign to fall back to sleep. We are extremy exhausted . He was sleeping on a mattress on the floor once he started banging on his pack n play walls. But now it is unsafe as he can sneak around and tries to reach stand fan, pull our bedskirt to climb up or tries to drag all the rolled up towels cushtions placed along and underneath our bed to keep him from go under the bed.I try to cosleeping but he always scratches me or buries his face into my body or pillow or my blanket forcebly.I stopped using any comfoter even though it is really cold but he tends to bury his face into these soft fluffly things to get a comfortable position which scares me a lot. He does not leave even 1 mm gap between his nose and my body or pillow or blanket and we both are hanging on one side of bed though the rest of the bed is emply.this is so tiring. Is this behavior normal for the babies? How do you manage to cosleeping? And please let me know if any rental co for crib rents ? I wanna know do you all think renting a crib is gonna work ? Because when he wakes up at night he does not cry, just get super active and wants to play laughs etc . Can I be rest assured if he is confined in his crib no matter how much movement and rolling he makes to play ? Is this a good idea? I do not know what to do? Please help
Well, I was wandering how much money you should sell guppies for....? I live in the usa, and was wandering , what's a good price to sell guppies at to a pet store? I've haerd many ranges, but what's the best average. I have so many- and they wont stop breeding, so I was planning to sell some babies for profits. Then, the profits will go to my aquariam. Thanks.
What are the laws on taking someones photograph in public without permission in Missouri, Usa? I was baby shower shopping for MY baby shower of all things, with my mother, when my ex landlord who i am in a landlord tenant dispute with, took my picture WITHOUT my permission, with her phone! You see i had had a court date on April the 14th and i requested a postponement because i am pregnant and have 101 things that are stressing me out at the moment and the last thing i need is to worry about a court date! I made this very clear to the judge and he granted the postponement. Some how my landlord got the idea i requested the postponement because i was on bed rest (which i NEVER even suggested) and she came up to me at my own job (off the clock of course) while i was shopping and while i was looking down at the checklist of things I heard someone say "katie i thought you were on bed rest??" when i looked up, without my permission she snapped my picture with her camera phone. This of course INFURIATES me and i wish to push it to the fullest extent whether this be a lawsuit or what be i don't care i believe it to be very wrong! Anyways i went to security in Walmart and told them the situation, they gladly escorted me the rest of the way threw my shopping and kept their eyes on her. The head of security told me that the whole time that she was in there she was following me around the store and keeping her eye on me. So today i am filing a restraining order on the terms that she was stalking me. I plan to counter sue one for harrassment, two for stalking and three for pain and suffering, with the amount of stress she has put on me it could have very well made me go into pre-term labor, risking my childs life. You see also i am the one who dealt with her this whole process never has my husband because well i have the courage to stand up to this woman and she has singled me out and has made SEVERAL personal attacks and i just wonder exactly what i could push in court. Opinions and suggestions are GREATLY appreciated. Oh and by the way i am located in Bates/Cass county Missouri. Thankyou

Where to buy...? Does anyone know of a store (USA) that sells solid colored onesies for babies? I just want a pack of primary or even pastel colored body suits with NO design. I haven't been able to find them anywhere! Thank in advance!
WAL-MART: Notice the poor quality of what they sell? I’ve bought underwear which falls apart in months…shirts which develop holes after a few washings…blank DVD’s which don’t format/work. The few DVD movies I have bought there seem to be as thin as a potato chip. So for a change, I went to a LOCAL Baby/Toy Store for a friend’s birthday party. I was scared to look at the tag (where is it made)…Made in USA! Imagine that! We actually do manufacture something. And the profit went to someone local, instead of a conglomerate/monopoly which is already swimming in billions. So what are we REALLY getting from Wal-Mart? Initial “savings”, only to find the product is of inferior quality (and has to be replaced several times over), and the real money went to some off-shore account, never to be seen in our economy. Anyone else notice a real LACK of quality in offering from Wal-Mart?
I want to move to the Philippines ASAP? I just came back from my second visit in your beautiful country and would like to move there. Here is the thing i met someone 18th ago, and we built a two story house and a very successful store in Batang Liago City. And she has two kids and cant handel it all. And also she may be having my baby, I hope. What I would like to know is what I have to do to get there as soon as i can. I'm ready to move now for her, but i know it's not that easy and all i have right now in the bank is less then10,000 USD. But I'm hoping since we have a successful store already and a house that some things can be waived for us?? And there is so much information out there it's confusing, can you tell me step by step what i have to do to get there? Also can i move there first, then do the paperwork to stay? Please let me know as soon as possible, she is in dire need of help and I need to be there for her. thank you so Much Fiore Bartello, age 44, Las Vegas USA
Calling all pregnant ladies in Canada/USA - where do you buy winter maternity wear? I'm visiting Toronto and Tennessee in early March, and I'll be 6 months pregnant. I'm on baby #2 so my bump is already very noticeable. Anyway, I know it'll be COLD!! The UK maternity retailers are useless, selling flimsy fashion items and marketing their spring/summer catalogue already. What do you lovely ladies wear to keep out the cold AND stay looking gorgeous? My daughter was a summer baby, so all my maternity stuff is for hot weather. If I don't get sorted soon I'll be making the trip in a floaty skirt and sandals!! Would love to hear what stores are your choice for maternity wear - then I can order stuff online! Thanks Clarabelle
Parakeet Breeding in USA? I used to breed parakeets in mexico when I was little (11 to 14 years old) it wasn't something I planned to do but I received a pair as a gift and they bred and from then on they just kept breeding every season. I learned how to train the babies and handfeed them. They were the best parakeets anyone could ask for: healthy, playful, they loved humans and they responded to them as well.. like "give me a kiss, get up.. come.. are u hungry?".. and they all knew. They would go out for hours everyday and go back to their cage by themselves. I really miss having parakeets like that,, My mom bought my sister a pair from a pet store but is no the same.. they are already too old to be tamed and they bonded with each other rather than with us. My question is: are there any restrictions here in the U.S to breed parakeets? like what is the banding for and is it needed? Id like to breed for my own parakeets and i don't want to buy from a breeder because i like the whole experience since the beginning. I've done a lot of research on this in case i missed something when i was breeding when i was little. and i will always be in touch with a vet so really my only question is the above asked and i'll ask it again: Is there any restrictions in the U.S to breed parakeets? and what are the bands on their feet exactly for?

Can you name some reasons to go vegetarian? ONE HUNDRED & ONE REASONS TO GO VEGETARIAN People Land Air Water Efficiency Animals Health PEOPLE Every year in the UK we feed our livestock enough food to feed 250,000,000 people while in the world 30,000,000 people die of starvation 20 vegetarians can live off the land required by one meat eater Every 3 seconds a child dies of starvation somewhere in the world If Americans reduced their meat consumption by 10% it would free 12,000,000 tons of grain - enough to feed 60,000,000 people (the population of Great Britain) If all Americans became vegetarian, it would free enough grain to feed 600,000,000 people (the population of India) Intensification in animal farming has displaced 1,000,000's of people from their traditional lands - eg. indigenous people in south & central america, native americans in north america & crofters in Great Britain - this is continuing today People displaced from their lands into cities succumb to dietary deficiency, diseases, parasites & opportunistic diseases In third world countries 1 in 10 babies die before their first birthday The UK imports £46,000,000 worth of grain from third world countries to feed our livestock Due to overgrazing 850,000,000 people live on land threatened by desertification & over 230,000,000 already live on land so severely desertified that they are unable to sustain their existence & face imminent starvation 1,000,000,000 people in the west gorging on meat & dairy leave 1,000,000,000 to waste away & 3,500,000,000 teeter on the brink LAND If they continue to clear American forests to raise cattle at the present rate, in 50 years there will be none left 1 acre yields 165 lbs of beef or 20,000 lbs of potatoes 8/10 of cultivated land in the UK is used to grow food for animals (14,732,000 hectares) It takes 16lbs of high protein soya to produce 1 lb of beef Since 1945 in the UK we have lost 95% of flower meadows, 50% of ancient woodlands, 40% of heathlands, 50% of wet lands & 224,000 km of hedgerows all due to animal farming Pressure on land due to meat farming leads to soil erosion 6billion tons/year in the USA If everyone went vegetarian upto 90% of land used for animal farming could be taken out of production & used to replant woodlands, leisure activities etc. 25% of Central america's forests have been destroyed for cattle grazing since 1960 Between 1966-1983 38% of the Amazon rain forest was destroyed for cattle grazing 90% of cattle ranches established on cleared forest land go bankrupt in less than 8 years as the land becomes barren due to nutrient loss & overgrazing Overgrazing by cattle is destroying the land & increasing desertification, nearly 430 million acres in the USA alone has suffered a 25-50% reduction in yield since first grazed An inch of topsoil takes 200-1000 years to develop - yet in the USA they have lost around 1/3 of their prime topsoil in 200 years (around 7 inches) due to animal farming Land will be lost due to rises in sea level due to global warming due to animal farming AIR The destruction of the rainforest by cattle farmers is destroying the lungs of the planet & reducing the worlds capacity to replenish our oxygen supply The 1,300,000,000 cattle in the world emit 60,000,000 tons of methane per year (methane is a greenhouse gas & leads to global warming) Burning of forests, grasslands & agricultural waste associated with animal farming releases 50-100,000,000 tons of methane per year Combining these figures, 25% of methane emissions are due to animal farming (not including the billions of sheep, pigs & poultry so the real figure is much higher) Fertilizer used to grow crops to feed to animals releases nitrous oxide - thought to account for 6% of the greenhouse effect Fertilizer, weedkiller & pesticides sprayed on crops enter the atmosphere creating a noxious carcinogenic cocktail CFCs are released into the air from refrigeration units used to store decomposing flesh (meat), milk & butter - CFCs are destroy the ozone layer Ammonia from animal urine also pollutes the atmosphere CO2 is released by burning oil & petrol in lorries, ships, abattoirs, dairies, factories etc. associated with meat & dairy production Emissions from large chemical plants which produce fertilizer, weedkiller & other agricultural chemicals are also poisoning our air WATER 25 gallons of water to produce 1lb of wheat & 2500 gallons to produce 1lb of meat UK farm animals produce 200,000,000 tonnes of slurry (liquid excrement) every year, the majority of which ends up in our rivers Bloody waste water from abattoirs ends up in our rivers In the USA every second humans produce 12,000 lbs of effluent while farmed animals produce 250,000 lbs Nitrates & pesticides used on crops grown to feed livestock end up in our rivers Meat & dairy farming uses 70 litres of water per day per animal in the UK or 159,250,000,000 litres per year in total The water used to produce 10 lbs of steak is equivalent to the average consumption of water for an entire household for an entire year Depletion of groundwater reserves to grow crops for animals & to supply abattoirs will lead to greater water shortages Aquafers (stores of underground water) in the San Joaquin valley in the USA are being drained at the rate of 500,000,000,000 gallons/year to produce meat 18% of all agricultural land in the world is irrigated & as global warming increases (partly due to animal farming) it will cost $200,000,000 to keep these systems going The water used to produce a 1000 lb beef steer is enough to float a Destroyer battleship The liquid waste from the various parts of the meat & dairy industry flow into the rivers & from there into the seas polluting them & encouraging huge algal blooms to grow EFFICIENCY To produce 1calorie of energy from meat takes 60 calories of petrol, whereas growing grains & legumes to directly feed people produces 20 calories for each calorie of fuel used ( thats 1200 times more efficient) Meat & dairy farming uses billions of gallons of oil to run tractors, fuel ships & lorries (to move animal feed & animals), pump billions of gallons of water to irrigate fields & run slaughterhouses, power refrigeration units to prevent the corpses from decomposing & to power sewage plants to clean up some of the pollution produced Cattle convert only 6% of their energy intake (mainly grains & soya) into flesh, the remaining 94% is wasted as heat, movement (which is why they keep many animals in very close confinement), hair, bones, faeces etc 1lb of beef takes 1 gallon of petrol to produce A family of four eating beef for a year uses enough petrol to run a car for 6 months (obviously depending on how far you drive!) If the full ecological cost of meat was passed onto the consumer - the price would be quadrupled (at least) The EC spends œ100,000,000's to subsidise animal production resulting in lakes of unwanted milk & mountains of unwanted meat & butter. This money could be better spent encouraging organic fruit, vegetable & grain production In the USA in 1979 145,000,000 tons of crops were fed to cattle resulting in only 21million tons of animal bodies - the cost of the wasted crops was $20,000,000,000 Between 1950 & 1985 grain production in Europe & the USA increased massively but 2/3 was fed to animals 70% of all grain is fed to animals Eating vast quantities of animal flesh, eggs, milk & butter is a luxury that most of the planet can not afford ANIMALS Fishing with drift (and other modern) nets weakens & destroys ecosystems by indiscriminately killing billions of sea creatures & disrupting the sea bed Fishermen's nets kill 10 times as many other animals as the fish they are hoping to catch Fish caught in nets die an agonising slow death of suffocation Each year 15,000,000,000 land animals are slaughtered for food & an unknown but much larger number of sea creatures (including 1000's of dolphins caught accidentally) Chickens are crammed into battery cages with upto 3 other birds, they are unable to even spread their wings & many can not even stand up Unwanted male chicks (because they can't lay eggs) are gassed or pulped while their sisters go to the battery sheds Chicks are debeaked without anaesthetic to prevent them injuring each other in the unnaturally confined conditions they are kept in - this is equivalent to having your fingernails pulled out without anaesthetic Modern farming methods using growth hormones & artificial lighting mean that many chickens out grow their bones, resulting in fractured & broken legs Sows are kept tethered in stalls 1.3 x 1 metre on concrete or slatted floors - they can not even turn around Poultry raised for meat are kept in windowless broiler sheds, with around 20-30,000 in each shed, they live in an area of 10-20 cm square - fighting due to overcrowding is common & like battery hens they commonly suffer from supperating bed sores Broilersheds are artificially lit 23 hours a day to produce rapid growth Animals travel between farms & to slaughter in overcrowded transporters with no food or water - resulting in stress, injuries & deaths - legal requirements are widely ignored 95% of poultry suffer injuries before being killed & 30% suffer broken bones Problems with stunning practices mean that many animals have their throats slit while still conscious (around 6% of cattle or 200,000 per year) & are then dipped in tanks of scalding water (to loosen feathers, bristles etc.) again while fully conscious 4000 animals die spurting their blood out every minute in a British slaughterhouse Calf leather comes from animals killed at just 2 weeks old Cows were fed on the ground up remains of other cows & sheep - the result is thought to be BSE (mad cow disease) in the USA cattle are fed partly on recycled plastic pellets Cows only give milk for 10 months after they have a calf - so they are routinely artificially inseminated (ie. mechanically raped) to keep them pregnant & milking - their calves are taken away (usually at 12 hours old) for meat or export to veal crates Cows would naturally live upto 20 years but are slaughtered after 5-7 years when their milk production begins to fall In the UK animals are killed by first being stunned with electricity or a captive bolt gun (ie. a bolt is fired into their heads) before having their throats slit & being plunged into boiling water - all this happens on a production line with the animals being hung upside down from a moving conveyor belt - this is factory farming "Animals are those unfortunate slaves & victims of the most brutal part of mankind" - John Stewart Mill (philosopher) Veal calves are confined in stalls in the dark, unable to move & are fed on pigs blood , chocolate & dried milk (we are drinking the rich fresh milk of their mothers) Cows naturally produce 5 litres of milk per day for their calves - under the intensified systems of modern farming they produce 25-40 litres per day - resulting in swollen & inflamed udders - at this rate they are soon worn out Large areas of land are under monoculture to grow crops to feed to animals - these areas are wildlife deserts supporting fewer & fewer species. HEALTH Vegetarians have a 20% lower rate of mortality from all causes (ie. they live longer & don't get sick as often) Meat is full of traces of antibiotics, hormones, toxins produced by stress & pesticide residues that become concentrated from all the crops they have eaten Fish contain heavy metals & other pollutants -many of which originated on farms The world health organisation recommends a diet low in saturated fat, sugar, salt & with plenty of fibre - exactly what you get on a vegan/vegetarian diet Farmed animals contain upto 50% saturated fat in their bodies Vegetarians have 24% reduced risk of getting heart disease & Vegans a 57% reduction (heart disease is the biggest killer in the UK accounting for 50% of deaths) Obesity is rare in vegetarians, obesity is related to many diseases Vegans & vegetarians have lower blood pressure & cholesterol levels - high levels are associated with heart disease, strokes & kidney failure Vegetarians have a 50% reduced risk of dying of diabetes Vegetarians have a 40% reduced level of cancer than the general population thought to be because they have a higher intake of vitamins A,C & E Vegetarians have a reduced risk of developing gall & kidney stones 80% of food poisoning is due to infected meat (faeces, bacteria etc.) after all meat is decomposing flesh - most of the rest is due to salmonella in eggs Osteoporosis due to calcium loss from bones is mainly due to the sulphur content in meat & casein protein in milk that cause calcium to be lost in the urine - the countries with the highest meat & dairy consumption are those with the highest levels of brittle bones 50% of people do not have the enzyme to digest milk properly & milk allergy is related to asthma & eczema Meat eaters have double the rate of Alzheimers disease as Vegans & Vegetarians - some people also think that Parkinsons disease is also linked to meat eating Egg yolk is a dense concentration of saturated fat & the white is high in albumin protein associated with leaching calcium into your urine. Butter is 80% saturated fat, cream is 40% saturated fat & cheese is 25-40% saturated fat Meat eaters are two and a half times more likely to get bowel cancer than Vegetarians The cling film used to wrap meat in supermarkets & butchers contains chemicals linked to falling sperm counts in men Chinese people (living mainly on a vegetarian diet) consume 20% more calories than Americans but Americans are 20% fatter Of 2,100,000 deaths in the USA in 1987, 1,500,000 were related to diet (ie. meat & dairy) AND I COULD GO ON ! If you've read this far, I hope that you are beginning to see that the Meat & Dairy industry is a major contributor to misery on this planet. It is destroying the health of people in rich countries, starving those in poor countries, it is torturing & killing billions of animals every year and in the meantime it is one of the major factors in the destruction of the environment - so what does the meat & dairy industry have to say in it's defence? Well their only real point is usually "Meat is tasty" - fair enough a lot of people enjoy the taste of meat - but there are plenty of delicious alternatives (just consider the huge range of vegetarian dishes in Indian cooking - one of the oldest & most sophisticated cuisines in the world) and if you really crave meat & dairy, nowadays there are plenty of healthy non animal alternatives - just look in the supermarket & health food shop. So I hope you will agree it's pretty pathetic to consider all the evidence & then say "well I know you're right about the environment & health & the animals - but I just love my meat" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Note: ARC is @nti-copyright throughout - Copy and distribute any part as you wish. is this type of selling illegal? You all know, pet shop named Sky Pets. Now, it's run by 2 or 3 people. It has neglected animals. Not just reptiles, but fish, birds, etc. I'm only 11 but I'm ticked off, and I'm going to do something about it. It sells baby turtles, and since the manager is chinese he thinks it's okay to sell baby turtles. Now, this is in Canada, so it may or may not apply differently in the U.S.A. Now, lots of people come to this store, and get horrible advice, like a 1 meter fish can live in a 75 gallon. What the f***? Are they crazy? See what I mean now. Lots of customer come to this store any buy these baby turtles. Now, they are planning a scam. They put all prices 50% off. Now, you may think this is good, but in reality they just care about money. For example, if they sold a turtle for like $10, they may sell 2 turtles a day, which means they would get $20. But if they lower the price to half, they would sell way more and get more customers, so the income could be much higher than $20. I'm gonna get fooled by these tricks. Anyways, lots of states ban selling turtles under 4". Now, the majority of these turtles in Sky Pets are all babies with a carapace less than 2". Is this illegal? Remember it's Canada, not USA. I'm NOT gonna get fooled by these tricks (spelling error in the question) I mean their abusing pets and trying to sell them, they give horrible advice and ha I mean their abusing pets and trying to sell them, they give horrible advice and ha Scotty that's not what I mean. You didn't answer properly and I will kick ur @ss. What I mean is that they are abusing their pets and trying to sell them. Scotty I will kick ur @ss. It's ignorance, k? Not competition. They just want money by being cruel. So if anyone answers like Scotty, SHUT UP AND SHOVE OFF.

Is it good to drink milk? The text is too long but worthwhile read....? "MILK" Just the word itself sounds comforting! "How about a nice cup of hot milk?" The last time you heard that question it was from someone who cared for you--and you appreciated their effort. The entire matter of food and especially that of milk is surrounded with emotional and cultural importance. Milk was our very first food. If we were fortunate it was our mother's milk. A loving link, given and taken. It was the only path to survival. If not mother's milk it was cow's milk or soy milk "formula"--rarely it was goat, camel or water buffalo milk. Now, we are a nation of milk drinkers. Nearly all of us. Infants, the young, adolescents, adults and even the aged. We drink dozens or even several hundred gallons a year and add to that many pounds of "dairy products" such as cheese, butter, and yogurt. Can there be anything wrong with this? We see reassuring images of healthy, beautiful people on our television screens and hear messages that assure us that, "Milk is good for your body." Our dieticians insist that: "You've got to have milk, or where will you get your calcium?" School lunches always include milk and nearly every hospital meal will have milk added. And if that isn't enough, our nutritionists told us for years that dairy products make up an "essential food group." Industry spokesmen made sure that colourful charts proclaiming the necessity of milk and other essential nutrients were made available at no cost for schools. Cow's milk became "normal." You may be surprised to learn that most of the human beings that live on planet Earth today do not drink or use cow's milk. Further, most of them can't drink milk because it makes them ill. There are students of human nutrition who are not supportive of milk use for adults. Here is a quotation from the March/April 1991 Utne Reader: If you really want to play it safe, you may decide to join the growing number of Americans who are eliminating dairy products from their diets altogether. Although this sounds radical to those of us weaned on milk and the five basic food groups, it is eminently viable. Indeed, of all the mammals, only humans--and then only a minority, principally Caucasians--continue to drink milk beyond babyhood. Who is right? Why the confusion? Where best to get our answers? Can we trust milk industry spokesmen? Can you trust any industry spokesmen? Are nutritionists up to date or are they simply repeating what their professors learned years ago? What about the new voices urging caution? I believe that there are three reliable sources of information. The first, and probably the best, is a study of nature. The second is to study the history of our own species. Finally we need to look at the world's scientific literature on the subject of milk. Let's look at the scientific literature first. From 1988 to 1993 there were over 2,700 articles dealing with milk recorded in the 'Medicine' archives. Fifteen hundred of theses had milk as the main focus of the article. There is no lack of scientific information on this subject. I reviewed over 500 of the 1,500 articles, discarding articles that dealt exclusively with animals, esoteric research and inconclusive studies. How would I summarize the articles? They were only slightly less than horrifying. First of all, none of the authors spoke of cow's milk as an excellent food, free of side effects and the 'perfect food' as we have been led to believe by the industry. The main focus of the published reports seems to be on intestinal colic, intestinal irritation, intestinal bleeding, anemia, allergic reactions in infants and children as well as infections such as salmonella. More ominous is the fear of viral infection with bovine leukemia virus or an AIDS-like virus as well as concern for childhood diabetes. Contamination of milk by blood and white (pus) cells as well as a variety of chemicals and insecticides was also discussed. Among children the problems were allergy, ear and tonsillar infections, bedwetting, asthma, intestinal bleeding, colic and childhood diabetes. In adults the problems seemed centered more around heart disease and arthritis, allergy, sinusitis, and the more serious questions of leukemia, lymphoma and cancer. I think that an answer can also be found in a consideration of what occurs in nature & what happens with free living mammals and what happens with human groups living in close to a natural state as 'hunter-gatherers'. Our paleolithic ancestors are another crucial and interesting group to study. Here we are limited to speculation and indirect evidences, but the bony remains available for our study are remarkable. There is no doubt whatever that these skeletal remains reflect great strength, muscularity (the size of the muscular insertions show this), and total absence of advanced osteoporosis. And if you feel that these people are not important for us to study, consider that today our genes are programming our bodies in almost exactly the same way as our ancestors of 50,000 to 100,000 years ago. WHAT IS MILK? Milk is a maternal lactating secretion, a short term nutrient for new-borns. Nothing more, nothing less. Invariably, the mother of any mammal will provide her milk for a short period of time immediately after birth. When the time comes for 'weaning', the young offspring is introduced to the proper food for that species of mammal. A familiar example is that of a puppy. The mother nurses the pup for just a few weeks and then rejects the young animal and teaches it to eat solid food. Nursing is provided by nature only for the very youngest of mammals. Of course, it is not possible for animals living in a natural state to continue with the drinking of milk after weaning. IS ALL MILK THE SAME? Then there is the matter of where we get our milk. We have settled on the cow because of its docile nature, its size, and its abundant milk supply. Somehow this choice seems 'normal' and blessed by nature, our culture, and our customs. But is it natural? Is it wise to drink the milk of another species of mammal? Consider for a moment, if it was possible, to drink the milk of a mammal other than a cow, let's say a rat. Or perhaps the milk of a dog would be more to your liking. Possibly some horse milk or cat milk. Do you get the idea? Well, I'm not serious about this, except to suggest that human milk is for human infants, dogs' milk is for pups, cows' milk is for calves, cats' milk is for kittens, and so forth. Clearly, this is the way nature intends it. Just use your own good judgement on this one. Milk is not just milk. The milk of every species of mammal is unique and specifically tailored to the requirements of that animal. For example, cows' milk is very much richer in protein than human milk. Three to four times as much. It has five to seven times the mineral content. However, it is markedly deficient in essential fatty acids when compared to human mothers' milk. Mothers' milk has six to ten times as much of the essential fatty acids, especially linoleic acid. (Incidentally, skimmed cow's milk has no linoleic acid). It simply is not designed for humans. Food is not just food, and milk is not just milk. It is not only the proper amount of food but the proper qualitative composition that is critical for the very best in health and growth. Biochemists and physiologists -and rarely medical doctors - are gradually learning that foods contain the crucial elements that allow a particular species to develop its unique specializations. Clearly, our specialization is for advanced neurological development and delicate neuromuscular control. We do not have much need of massive skeletal growth or huge muscle groups as does a calf. Think of the difference between the demands make on the human hand and the demands on a cow's hoof. Human new-borns specifically need critical material for their brains, spinal cord and nerves. Can mother's milk increase intelligence? It seems that it can. In a remarkable study published in Lancet during 1992 (Vol. 339, p. 261-4), a group of British workers randomly placed premature infants into two groups. One group received a proper formula, the other group received human breast milk. Both fluids were given by stomach tube. These children were followed up for over 10 years. In intelligence testing, the human milk children averaged 10 IQ points higher! Well, why not? Why wouldn't the correct building blocks for the rapidly maturing and growing brain have a positive effect? In the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (1982) Ralph Holman described an infant who developed profound neurological disease while being nourished by intravenous fluids only. The fluids used contained only linoleic acid - just one of the essential fatty acids. When the other, alpha linoleic acid, was added to the intravenous fluids the neurological disorders cleared. In the same journal five years later Bjerve, Mostad and Thoresen, working in Norway found exactly the same problem in adult patients on long term gastric tube feeding. In 1930 Dr. G.O. Burr in Minnesota working with rats found that linoleic acid deficiencies created a deficiency syndrome. Why is this mentioned? In the early 1960s pediatricians found skin lesions in children fed formulas without the same linoleic acid. Remembering the research, the addition of the acid to the formula cured the problem. Essential fatty acids are just that and cows' milk is markedly deficient in these when compared to human milk. WELL, AT LEAST COW'S MILK IS PURE Or is it? Fifty years ago an average cow produced 2,000 pounds of milk per year. Today the top producers give 50,000 pounds! How was this accomplished? Drugs, antibiotics, hormones, forced feeding plans and specialized breeding; that's how. The latest high-tech onslaught on the poor cow is bovine growth hormone or BGH. This genetically engineered drug is supposed to stimulate milk production but, according to Monsanto, the hormone's manufacturer, does not affect the milk or meat. There are three other manufacturers: Upjohn, Eli Lilly, and American Cyanamid Company. Obviously, there have been no long-term studies on the hormone's effect on the humans drinking the milk. Other countries have banned BGH because of safety concerns. One of the problems with adding molecules to a milk cows' body is that the molecules usually come out in the milk. I don't know how you feel, but I don't want to experiment with the ingestion of a growth hormone. A related problem is that it causes a marked increase (50 to 70 per cent) in mastitis. This, then, requires antibiotic therapy, and the residues of the antibiotics appear in the milk. It seems that the public is uneasy about this product and in one survey 43 per cent felt that growth hormone treated milk represented a health risk. A vice president for public policy at Monsanto was opposed to labelling for that reason, and because the labelling would create an 'artificial distinction'. The country is awash with milk as it is, we produce more milk than we can consume. Let's not create storage costs and further taxpayer burdens, because the law requires the USDA to buy any surplus of butter, cheese, or non-fat dry milk at a support price set by Congress! In fiscal 1991, the USDA spent $757 million on surplus butter, and one billion dollars a year on average for price supports during the 1980s (Consumer Reports, May 1992: 330-32). Any lactating mammal excretes toxins through her milk. This includes antibiotics, pesticides, chemicals and hormones. Also, all cows' milk contains blood! The inspectors are simply asked to keep it under certain limits. You may be horrified to learn that the USDA allows milk to contain from one to one and a half million white blood cells per millilitre. (That's only 1/30 of an ounce). If you don't already know this, I'm sorry to tell you that another way to describe white cells where they don't belong would be to call them pus cells. To get to the point, is milk pure or is it a chemical, biological, and bacterial cocktail? Finally, will the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) protect you? The United States General Accounting Office (GAO) tells us that the FDA and the individual States are failing to protect the public from drug residues in milk. Authorities test for only 4 of the 82 drugs in dairy cows. As you can imagine, the Milk Industry Foundation's spokesman claims it's perfectly safe. Jerome Kozak says, "I still think that milk is the safest product we have." Other, perhaps less biased observers, have found the following: 38% of milk samples in 10 cities were contaminated with sulfa drugs or other antibiotics. (This from the Centre for Science in the Public Interest and The Wall Street Journal, Dec. 29, 1989).. A similar study in Washington, DC found a 20 percent contamination rate (Nutrition Action Healthletter, April 1990). What's going on here? When the FDA tested milk, they found few problems. However, they used very lax standards. When they used the same criteria, the FDA data showed 51 percent of the milk samples showed drug traces. Let's focus in on this because it’s critical to our understanding of the apparent discrepancies. The FDA uses a disk-assay method that can detect only 2 of the 30 or so drugs found in milk. Also, the test detects only at the relatively high level. A more powerful test called the 'Charm II test' can detect drugs down to 5 parts per billion. One nasty subject must be discussed. It seems that cows are forever getting infections around the udder that require ointments and antibiotics. An article from France tells us that when a cow receives penicillin, that penicillin appears in the milk for from 4 to 7 milkings. Another study from the University of Nevada, Reno tells of cells in 'mastic milk', milk from cows with infected udders. An elaborate analysis of the cell fragments, employing cell cultures, flow cytometric analysis , and a great deal of high tech stuff. Do you know what the conclusion was? If the cow has mastitis, there is pus in the milk. Sorry, it’s in the study, all concealed with language such as "macrophages containing many vacuoles and phagocytosed particles," etc. IT GETS WORSE Well, at least human mothers' milk is pure! Sorry. A huge study showed that human breast milk in over 14,000 women had contamination by pesticides! Further, it seems that the sources of the pesticides are meat and--you guessed it-- dairy products. Well, why not? These pesticides are concentrated in fat and that's what's in these products. (Of interest, a subgroup of lactating vegetarian mothers had only half the levels of contamination). A recent report showed an increased concentration of pesticides in the breast tissue of women with breast cancer when compared to the tissue of women with fibrocystic disease. Other articles in the standard medical literature describe problems. Just scan these titles: 1.Cow's Milk as a Cause of Infantile Colic Breast-Fed Infants. Lancet 2 (1978): 437 2.Dietary Protein-Induced Colitis in Breast- Fed Infants, J. Pediatr. I01 (1982): 906 3.The Question of the Elimination of Foreign Protein in Women's Milk, J. Immunology 19 (1930): 15 There are many others. There are dozens of studies describing the prompt appearance of cows' milk allergy in children being exclusively breast-fed! The cows' milk allergens simply appear in the mother's milk and are transmitted to the infant. A committee on nutrition of the American Academy of Pediatrics reported on the use of whole cows' milk in infancy (Pediatrics 1983: 72-253). They were unable to provide any cogent reason why bovine milk should be used before the first birthday yet continued to recommend its use! Doctor Frank Oski from the Upstate Medical Centre Department of Pediatrics, commenting on the recommendation, cited the problems of acute gastrointestinal blood loss in infants, the lack of iron, recurrent abdominal pain, milk- borne infections and contaminants, and said: Why give it at all - then or ever? In the face of uncertainty about many of the potential dangers of whole bovine milk, it would seem prudent to recommend that whole milk not be started until the answers are available. Isn't it time for these uncontrolled experiments on human nutrition to come to an end? In the same issue of Pediatrics he further commented: It is my thesis that whole milk should not be fed to the infant in the first year of life because of its association with iron deficiency anemia (milk is so deficient in iron that an infant would have to drink an impossible 31 quarts a day to get the RDA of 15 mg), acute gastrointiestinal bleeding, and various manifestations of food allergy. I suggest that unmodified whole bovine milk should not be consumed after infancy because of the problems of lactose intolerance, its contribution to the genesis of atherosclerosis, and its possible link to other diseases. In late 1992 Dr. Benjamin Spock, possibly the best known pediatrician in history, shocked the country when he articulated the same thoughts and specified avoidance for the first two years of life. Here is his quotation: I want to pass on the word to parents that cows' milk from the carton has definite faults for some babies. Human milk is the right one for babies. A study comparing the incidence of allergy and colic in the breast-fed infants of omnivorous and vegan mothers would be important. I haven't found such a study; it would be both important and inexpensive. And it will probably never be done. There is simply no academic or economic profit involved. OTHER PROBLEMS Let's just mention the problems of bacterial contamination. Salmonella, E. coli, and staphylococcal infections can be traced to milk. In the old days tuberculosis was a major problem and some folks want to go back to those times by insisting on raw milk on the basis that it's "natural." This is insanity! A study from UCLA showed that over a third of all cases of salmonella infection in California, 1980-1983 were traced to raw milk. That'll be a way to revive good old brucellosis again and I would fear leukemia, too. (More about that later). In England, and Wales where raw milk is still consumed there have been outbreaks of milk-borne diseases. The Journal of the American Medical Association (251: 483, 1984) reported a multi-state series of infections caused by Yersinia enterocolitica in pasteurised whole milk. This is despite safety precautions. All parents dread juvenile diabetes for their children. A Canadian study reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Mar. 1990, describes a "...significant positive correlation between consumption of unfermented milk protein and incidence of insulin dependent diabetes mellitus in data from various countries. Conversely a possible negative relationship is observed between breast-feeding at age 3 months and diabetes risk.". Another study from Finland found that diabetic children had higher levels of serum antibodies to cows’ milk (Diabetes Research 7(3): 137-140 March 1988). Here is a quotation from this study: We infer that either the pattern of cows' milk consumption is altered in children who will have insulin dependent diabetes mellitus or, their immunological reactivity to proteins in cows' milk is enhanced, or the permeability of their intestines to cows' milk protein is higher than normal. The April 18, 1992 British Medical Journal has a fascinating study contrasting the difference in incidence of juvenile insulin dependent diabetes in Pakistani children who have migrated to England. The incidence is roughly 10 times greater in the English group compared to children remaining in Pakistan! What caused this highly significant increase? The authors said that "the diet was unchanged in Great Britain." Do you believe that? Do you think that the availability of milk, sugar and fat is the same in Pakistan as it is in England? That a grocery store in England has the same products as food sources in Pakistan? I don't believe that for a minute. Remember, we're not talking here about adult onset, type II diabetes which all workers agree is strongly linked to diet as well as to a genetic predisposition. This study is a major blow to the "it's all in your genes" crowd. Type I diabetes was always considered to be genetic or possibly viral, but now this? So resistant are we to consider diet as causation that the authors of the last article concluded that the cooler climate in England altered viruses and caused the very real increase in diabetes! The first two authors had the same reluctance top admit the obvious. The milk just may have had something to do with the disease. The latest in this remarkable list of reports, a New England Journal of Medicine article (July 30, 1992), also reported in the Los Angeles Times. This study comes from the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and from Finnish researchers. In Finland there is "...the world's highest rate of dairy product consumption and the world's highest rate of insulin dependent diabetes. The disease strikes about 40 children out of every 1,000 there contrasted with six to eight per 1,000 in the United States.... Antibodies produced against the milk protein during the first year of life, the researchers speculate, also attack and destroy the pancreas in a so-called auto-immune reaction, producing diabetes in people whose genetic makeup leaves them vulnerable." "...142 Finnish children with newly diagnosed diabetes. They found that every one had at least eight times as many antibodies against the milk protein as did healthy children, clear evidence that the children had a raging auto immune disorder." The team has now expanded the study to 400 children and is starting a trial where 3,000 children will receive no dairy products during the first nine months of life. "The study may take 10 years, but we'll get a definitive answer one way or the other," according to one of the researchers. I would caution them to be certain that the breast feeding mothers use on cows' milk in their diets or the results will be confounded by the transmission of the cows' milk protein in the mother's breast milk.... Now what was the reaction from the diabetes association? This is very interesting! Dr. F. Xavier Pi-Sunyer, the president of the association says: "It does not mean that children should stop drinking milk or that parents of diabetics should withdraw dairy products. These are rich sources of good protein." (Emphasis added) My God, it's the "good protein" that causes the problem! Do you suspect that the dairy industry may have helped the American Diabetes Association in the past? LEUKEMIA? LYMPHOMA? THIS MAY BE THE WORST--BRACE YOURSELF! I hate to tell you this, but the bovine leukemia virus is found in more than three of five dairy cows in the United States! This involves about 80% of dairy herds. Unfortunately, when the milk is pooled, a very large percentage of all milk produced is contaminated (90 to 95 per cent). Of course the virus is killed in pasteurisation-- if the pasteurisation was done correctly. What if the milk is raw? In a study of randomly collected raw milk samples the bovine leukemia virus was recovered from two-thirds. I sincerely hope that the raw milk dairy herds are carefully monitored when compared to the regular herds. (Science 1981; 213:1014). This is a world-wide problem. One lengthy study from Germany deplored the problem and admitted the impossibility of keeping the virus from infected cows' milk from the rest of the milk. Several European countries, including Germany and Switzerland, have attempted to "cull" the infected cows from their herds. Certainly the United States must be the leader in the fight against leukemic dairy cows, right? Wrong! We are the worst in the world with the former exception of Venezuela according to Virgil Hulse MD, a milk specialist who also has a B.S. in Dairy Manufacturing as well as a Master's degree in Public Health. As mentioned, the leukemia virus is rendered inactive by pasteurisation. Of course. However, there can be Chernobyl like accidents. One of these occurred in the Chicago area in April, 1985. At a modern, large, milk processing plant an accidental "cross connection" between raw and pasteurized milk occurred. A violent salmonella outbreak followed, killing 4 and making an estimated 150,000 ill. Now the question I would pose to the dairy industry people is this: "How can you assure the people who drank this milk that they were not exposed to the ingestion of raw, unkilled, bully active bovine leukemia viruses?" Further, it would be fascinating to know if a "cluster" of leukemia cases blossoms in that area in 1 to 3 decades. There are reports of "leukemia clusters" elsewhere, one of them mentioned in the June 10, 1990 San Francisco Chronicle involving Northern California. What happens to other species of mammals when they are exposed to the bovine leukemia virus? It's a fair question and the answer is not reassuring. Virtually all animals exposed to the virus develop leukemia. This includes sheep, goats, and even primates such as rhesus monkeys and chimpanzees. The route of transmission includes ingestion (both intravenous and intramuscular) and cells present in milk. There are obviously no instances of transfer attempts to human beings, but we know that the virus can infect human cells in vitro. There is evidence of human antibody formation to the bovine leukemia virus; this is disturbing. How did the bovine leukemia virus particles gain access to humans and become antigens? Was it as small, denatured particles? If the bovine leukemia viruses causes human leukemia, we could expect the dairy states with known leukemic herds to have a higher incidence of human leukemia. Is this so? Unfortunately, it seems to be the case! Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin have statistically higher incidence of leukemia than the national average. In Russia and in Sweden, areas with uncontrolled bovine leukemia virus have been linked with increases in human leukemia. I am also told that veterinarians have higher rates of leukemia than the general public. Dairy farmers have significantly elevated leukemia rates. Recent research shows lymphocytes from milk fed to neonatal mammals gains access to bodily tissues by passing directly through the intestinal wall. An optimistic note from the University of Illinois, Ubana from the Department of Animal Sciences shows the importance of one's perspective. Since they are concerned with the economics of milk and not primarily the health aspects, they noted that the production of milk was greater in the cows with the bovine leukemia virus. However when the leukemia produced a persistent and significant lymphocytosis (increased white blood cell count), the production fell off. They suggested "a need to re-evaluate the economic impact of bovine leukemia virus infection on the dairy industry". Does this mean that leukemia is good for profits only if we can keep it under control? You can get the details on this business concern from Proc. Nat. Acad. Sciences, U.S. Feb. 1989. I added emphasis and am insulted that a university department feels that this is an economic and not a human health issue. Do not expect help from the Department of Agriculture or the universities. The money stakes and the political pressures are too great. You're on you own. What does this all mean? We know that virus is capable of producing leukemia in other animals. Is it proven that it can contribute to human leukemia (or lymphoma, a related cancer)? Several articles tackle this one: 1.Epidemiologic Relationships of the Bovine Population and Human Leukemia in Iowa. Am Journal of Epidemiology 112 (1980):80 2.Milk of Dairy Cows Frequently Contains a Leukemogenic Virus. Science 213 (1981): 1014 3.Beware of the Cow. (Editorial) Lancet 2 (1974):30 4.Is Bovine Milk A Health Hazard?. Pediatrics; Suppl. Feeding the Normal Infant. 75:182-186; 1985 In Norway, 1422 individuals were followed for 11 and a half years. Those drinking 2 or more glasses of milk per day had 3.5 times the incidence of cancer of the lymphatic organs. British Med. Journal 61:456-9, March 1990. One of the more thoughtful articles on this subject is from Allan S. Cunningham of Cooperstown, New York. Writing in the Lancet, November 27, 1976 (page 1184), his article is entitled, "Lymphomas and Animal-Protein Consumption". Many people think of milk as “liquid meat” and Dr. Cunningham agrees with this. He tracked the beef and dairy consumption in terms of grams per day for a one year period, 1955-1956., in 15 countries . New Zealand, United States and Canada were highest in that order. The lowest was Japan followed by Yugoslavia and France. The difference between the highest and lowest was quite pronounced: 43.8 grams/day for New Zealanders versus 1.5 for Japan. Nearly a 30-fold difference! (Parenthetically, the last 36 years have seen a startling increase in the amount of beef and milk used in Japan and their disease patterns are reflecting this, confirming the lack of 'genetic protection' seen in migration studies. Formerly the increase in frequency of lymphomas in Japanese people was only in those who moved to the USA)! An interesting bit of trivia is to note the memorial built at the Gyokusenji Temple in Shimoda, Japan. This marked the spot where the first cow was killed in Japan for human consumption! The chains around this memorial were a gift from the US Navy. Where do you suppose the Japanese got the idea to eat beef? The year? 1930. Cunningham found a highly significant positive correlation between deaths from lymphomas and beef and dairy ingestion in the 15 countries analysed. A few quotations from his article follow: The average intake of protein in many countries is far in excess of the recommended requirements. Excessive consumption of animal protein may be one co-factor in the causation of lymphomas by acting in the following manner. Ingestion of certain proteins results in the adsorption of antigenic fragments through the gastrointestinal mucous membrane. This results in chronic stimulation of lymphoid tissue to which these fragments gain access "Chronic immunological stimulation causes lymphomas in laboratory animals and is believed to cause lymphoid cancers in men." The gastrointestinal mucous membrane is only a partial barrier to the absorption of food antigens, and circulating antibodies to food protein is commonplace especially potent lymphoid stimulants. Ingestion of cows' milk can produce generalized lymphadenopathy, hepatosplenomegaly, and profound adenoid hypertrophy. It has been conservatively estimated that more than 100 distinct antigens are released by the normal digestion of cows' milk which evoke production of all antibody classes [This may explain why pasteurized, killed viruses are still antigenic and can still cause disease. Here's more. A large prospective study from Norway was reported in the British Journal of Cancer 61 (3):456-9, March 1990. (Almost 16,000 individuals were followed for 11 and a half years). For most cancers there was no association between the tumour and milk ingestion. However, in lymphoma, there was a strong positive association. If one drank two glasses or more daily (or the equivalent in dairy products), the odds were 3.4 times greater than in persons drinking less than one glass of developing a lymphoma. There are two other cow-related diseases that you should be aware of. At this time they are not known to be spread by the use of dairy products and are not known to involve man. The first is bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), and the second is the bovine immunodeficiency virus (BIV). The first of these diseases, we hope, is confined to England and causes cavities in the animal's brain. Sheep have long been known to suffer from a disease called scrapie. It seems to have been started by the feeding of contaminated sheep parts, especially brains, to the British cows. Now, use your good sense. Do cows seem like carnivores? Should they eat meat? This profit-motivated practice backfired and bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or Mad Cow Disease, swept Britain. The disease literally causes dementia in the unfortunate animal and is 100 per cent incurable. To date, over 100,000 cows have been incinerated in England in keeping with British law. Four hundred to 500 cows are reported as infected each month. The British public is concerned and has dropped its beef consumption by 25 per cent, while some 2,000 schools have stopped serving beef to children. Several farmers have developed a fatal disease syndrome that resembles both BSE and CJD (Creutzfeldt-Jakob- Disease). But the British Veterinary Association says that transmission of BSE to humans is "remote." The USDA agrees that the British epidemic was due to the feeding of cattle with bonemeal or animal protein produced at rendering plants from the carcasses of scrapie-infected sheep. The have prohibited the importation of live cattle and zoo ruminants from Great Britain and claim that the disease does not exist in the United States. However, there may be a problem. "Downer cows" are animals who arrive at auction yards or slaughter houses dead, trampled, lacerated, dehydrated, or too ill from viral or bacterial diseases to walk. Thus they are "down." If they cannot respond to electrical shocks by walking, they are dragged by chains to dumpsters and transported to rendering plants where, if they are not already dead, they are killed. Even a "humane" death is usually denied them. They are then turned into protein food for animals as well as other preparations. Minks that have been fed this protein have developed a fatal encephalopathy that has some resemblance to BSE. Entire colonies of minks have been lost in this manner, particularly in Wisconsin. It is feared that the infective agent is a prion or slow virus possible obtained from the ill "downer cows." The British Medical Journal in an editorial whimsically entitled "How Now Mad Cow?" (BMJ vol. 304, 11 Apr. 1992:929- 30) describes cases of BSE in species not previously known to be affected, such as cats. They admit that produce contaminated with bovine spongiform encephalopathy entered the human food chain in England between 1986 and 1989. They say. "The result of this experiment is awaited." As the incubation period can be up to three decades, wait we must. The immunodeficency virus is seen in cattle in the United States and is more worrisome. Its structure is closely related to that of the human AIDS virus. At this time we do not know if exposure to the raw BIV proteins can cause the sera of humans to become positive for HIV. The extent of the virus among American herds is said to be "widespread". (The USDA refuses to inspect the meat and milk to see if antibodies to this retrovirus is present). It also has no plans to quarantine the infected animals. As in the case of humans with AIDS, there is no cure for BIV in cows. Each day we consume beef and diary products from cows infected with these viruses and no scientific assurance exists that the products are safe. Eating raw beef (as in steak Tartare) strikes me as being very risky, especially after the Seattle E. coli deaths of 1993. A report in the Canadian Journal of Veterinary Research, October 1992, Vol. 56 pp.353-359 and another from the Russian literature, tell of a horrifying development. They report the first detection in human serum of the antibody to a bovine immunodeficiency virus protein. In addition to this disturbing report, is another from Russia telling us of the presence of virus proteins related to the bovine leukemia virus in 5 of 89 women with breast disease (Acta Virologica Feb. 1990 34(1): 19-26). The implications of these developments are unknown at present. However, it is safe to assume that these animal viruses are unlikely to "stay" in the animal kingdom. OTHER CANCERS--DOES IT GET WORSE? Unfortunately it does. Ovarian cancer--a particularly nasty tumour--was associated with milk consumption by workers at Roswell Park Memorial Institute in Buffalo, New York. Drinking more than one glass of whole milk or equivalent daily gave a woman a 3.1 times risk over non-milk users. They felt that the reduced fat milk products helped reduce the risk. This association has been made repeatedly by numerous investigators. Another important study, this from the Harvard Medical School, analyzed data from 27 countries mainly from the 1970s. Again a significant positive correlation is revealed between ovarian cancer and per capita milk consumption. These investigators feel that the lactose component of milk is the responsible fraction, and the digestion of this is facilitated by the persistence of the ability to digest the lactose (lactose persistence) - a little different emphasis, but the same conclusion. This study was reported in the American Journal of Epidemiology 130 (5): 904-10 Nov. 1989. These articles come from two of the country's leading institutions, not the Rodale Press or Prevention Magazine. Even lung cancer has been associated with milk ingestion? The beverage habits of 569 lung cancer patients and 569 controls again at Roswell Park were studied in the International Journal of Cancer, April 15, 1989. Persons drinking whole milk 3 or more times daily had a 2-fold increase in lung cancer risk when compared to those never drinking whole milk. For many years we have been watching the lung cancer rates for Japanese men who smoke far more than American or European men but who develop fewer lung cancers. Workers in this research area feel that the total fat intake is the difference. There are not many reports studying an association between milk ingestion and prostate cancer. One such report though was of great interest. This is from the Roswell Park Memorial Institute and is found in Cancer 64 (3): 605-12, 1989. They analyzed the diets of 371 prostate cancer patients and comparable control subjects: Men who reported drinking three or more glasses of whole milk daily had a relative risk of 2.49 compared with men who reported never drinking whole milk the weight of the evidence appears to favour the hypothesis that animal fat is related to increased risk of prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is now the most common cancer diagnosed in US men and is the second leading cause of cancer mortality. WELL, WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? Is there any health reason at all for an adult human to drink cows' milk? It's hard for me to come up with even one good reason other than simple preference. But if you try hard, in my opinion, these would be the best two: milk is a source of calcium and it's a source of amino acids (proteins). Let's look at the calcium first. Why are we concerned at all about calcium? Obviously, we intend it to build strong bones and protect us against osteoporosis. And no doubt about it, milk is loaded with calcium. But is it a good calcium source for humans? I think not. These are the reasons. Excessive amounts of dairy products actually interfere with calcium absorption. Secondly, the excess of protein that the milk provides is a major cause of the osteoporosis problem. Dr. H egsted in England has been writing for years about the geographical distribution of osteoporosis. It seems that the countries with the highest intake of dairy products are invariably the countries with the most osteoporosis. He feels that milk is a cause of osteoporosis. Reasons to be given below. Numerous studies have shown that the level of calcium ingestion and especially calcium supplementation has no effect whatever on the development of osteoporosis. The most important such article appeared recently in the British Journal of Medicine where the long arm of our dairy industry can't reach. Another study in the United States actually showed a worsening in calcium balance in post-menopausal women given three 8-ounce glasses of cows' milk per day. (Am. Journal of Clin. Nutrition, 1985). The effects of hormone, gender, weight bearing on the axial bones, and in particular protein intake, are critically important. Another observation that may be helpful to our analysis is to note the absence of any recorded dietary deficiencies of calcium among people living on a natural diet without milk. For the key to the osteoporosis riddle, don’t look at calcium, look at protein. Consider these two contrasting groups. Eskimos have an exceptionally high protein intake estimated at 25 percent of total calories. They also have a high calcium intake at 2,500 mg/day. Their osteoporosis is among the worst in the world. The other instructive group are the Bantus of South Africa. They have a 12 percent protein diet, mostly p lant protein, and only 200 to 350 mg/day of calcium, about half our women's intake. The women have virtually no osteoporosis despite bearing six or more children and nursing them for prolonged periods! When African women immigrate to the United States, do they develop osteoporosis? The answer is yes, but not quite are much as Caucasian or Asian women. Thus, there is a genetic difference that is modified by diet. To answer the obvious question, "Well, where do you get your calcium?" The answer is: "From exactly the same place the cow gets the calcium, from green things that grow in the ground," mainly from leafy vegetables. After all, elephants and rhinos develop their huge bones (after being weaned) by eating green leafy plants, so do horses. Carnivorous animals also do quite nicely without leafy plants. It seems that all of earth's mammals do well if they live in harmony with their genetic programming and natural food. Only humans living an affluent life style have rampant osteoporosis. If animal references do not convince you, think of the several billion humans on this earth who have never seen cows' milk. Wouldn't you think osteoporosis would be prevalent in this huge group? The dairy people would suggest this but the truth is exactly the opposite. They have far less than that seen in the countries where dairy products are commonly consumed. It is the subject of another paper, but the truly significant determinants of osteoporosis are grossly excessive protein intakes and lack of weight bearing on long bones, both taking place over decades. Hormones play a secondary, but not trivial role in women. Milk is a deterrent to good bone health. THE PROTEIN MYTH Remember when you were a kid and the adults all told you to "make sure you get plenty of good protein". Protein was the nutritional "good guy”" when I was young. And of course milk is fitted right in. As regards protein, milk is indeed a rich source of protein- -"liquid meat," remember? However that isn't necessarily what we need. In actual fact it is a source of difficulty. Nearly all Americans eat too much protein. For this information we rely on the most authoritative source that I am aware of. This is the latest edition (1oth, 1989: 4th printing, Jan. 1992) of the Recommended Dietary Allowances produced by the National Research Council. Of interest, the current editor of this important work is Dr. Richard Havel of the University of California in San Francisco. First to be noted is that the recommended protein has been steadily revised downward in successive editions. The current recommendation is 0.75 g/kilo/day for adults 19 through 51 years. This, of course, is only 45 grams per day for the mythical 60 kilogram adult. You should also know that the WHO estimated the need for protein in adults to by .6g/kilo per day. (All RDA's are calculated with large safety allowances in case you're the type that wants to add some more to "be sure.") You can "get by" on 28 to 30 grams a day if necessary! Now 45 grams a day is a tiny amount of protein. That's an ounce and a half! Consider too, that the protein does not have to be animal protein. Vegetable protein is identical for all practical purposes and has no cholesterol and vastly less saturated fat. (Do not be misled by the antiquated belief that plant proteins must be carefully balanced to avoid deficiencies. This is not a realistic concern.) Therefore virtually all Americans, Canadians, British and European people are in a protein overloaded state. This has serious consequences when maintained over decades. The problems are the already mentioned osteoporosis, atherosclerosis and kidney damage. There is good evidence that certain malignancies, chiefly colon and rectal, are related to excessive meat intake. Barry Brenner, an eminent renal physiologist was the first to fully point out the dangers of excess protein for the kidney tubule. The dangers of the fat and cholesterol are known to all. Finally, you should know that the protein content of human milk is amount the lowest (0.9%) in mammals. IS THAT ALL OF THE TROUBLE? Sorry, there's more. Remember lactose? This is the principal carbohydrate of milk. It seems that nature provides new- borns with the enzymatic equipment to metabolize lactose, but this ability often extinguishes by age 4 or 5 years. What is the problem with lactose or milk sugar? It seems that it is a disaccharide which is too large to be absorbed into the blood stream without first being broken down into monosaccharides, namely galactose and glucose. This requires the presence of an enzyme, lactase plus additional enzymes to break down the galactose into glucose. Let's think about his for a moment. Nature gives us the ability to metabolize lactose for a few years and then shuts off the mechanism. Is Mother Nature trying to tell us something? Clearly all infants must drink milk. The fact that so many adults cannot seems to be related to the tendency for nature to abandon mechanisms that are not needed. At least half of the adult humans on this earth are lactose intolerant. It was not until the relatively recent introduction of dairy herding and the ability to "borrow" milk from another group of mammals that the survival advantage of preserving lactase (the enzyme that allows us to digest lactose) became evident. But why would it be advantageous to drink cows' milk? After all, most of the human beings in the history of the world did. And further, why was it just the white or light skinned humans who retained this knack while the pigmented people tended to lose it? Some students of evolution feel that white skin is a fairly recent innovation, perhaps not more than 20,000 or 30,000 years old. It clearly has to do with the Northward migration of early man to cold and relatively sunless areas when skins and clothing became available. Fair skin allows the production of Vitamin D from sunlight more readily than does dark skin. However, when only the face was exposed to sunlight that area of fair skin was insufficient to provide the vitamin D from sunlight. If dietary and sunlight sources were poorly available, the ability to use the abundant calcium in cows' milk would give a survival advantage to humans who could digest that milk. This seems to be the only logical explanation for fair skinned humans having a high degree of lactose tolerance when compared to dark skinned people. How does this break down? Certain racial groups, namely blacks are up to 90% lactose intolerant as adults. Caucasians are 20 to 40% lactose intolerant. Orientals are midway between the above two groups. Diarrhea, gas and abdominal cramps are the results of substantial milk intake in such persons. Most American Indians cannot tolerate milk. The milk industry admits that lactose intolerance plays intestinal havoc with as many as 50 million Americans. A lactose-intolerance industry has sprung up and had sales of $117 million in 1992 (Time May 17, 1993.) What if you are lactose-intolerant and lust after dairy products? Is all lost? Not at all. It seems that lactose is largely digested by bacteria and you will be able to enjoy your cheese despite lactose intolerance. Yogurt is similar in this respect. Finally, and I could never have dreamed this up, geneticists want to splice genes to alter the composition of milk (Am J Clin Nutr 1993 Suppl 302s). One could quibble and say that milk is totally devoid of fiber content and that its habitual use will predispose to constipation and bowel disorders. The association with anemia and occult intestinal bleeding in infants is known to all physicians. This is chiefly from its lack of iron and its irritating qualities for the intestinal mucosa. The pediatric literature abounds with articles describing irritated intestinal lining, bleeding, increased permeability as well as colic, diarrhea and vomiting in cows'milk-sensitive babies. The anemia gets a double push by loss of blood and iron as well as deficiency of iron in the cows' milk. Milk is also the leading cause of childhood allergy. LOW FAT One additional topic: the matter of "low fat" milk. A common and sincere question is: "Well, low fat milk is OK, isn't it?" The answer to this question is that low fat milk isn't low fat. The term "low fat" is a marketing term used to gull the public. Low fat milk contains from 24 to 33% fat as calories! The 2% figure is also misleading. This refers to weight. They don't tell you that, by weight, the milk is 87% water! "Well, then, kill-joy surely you must approve of non-fat milk!" I hear this quite a bit. (Another constant concern is: "What do you put on your cereal?") True, there is little or no fat, but now you have a relative overburden of protein and lactose. It there is something that we do not need more of it is another simple sugar-lactose, composed of galactose and glucose. Millions of Americans are lactose intolerant to boot, as noted. As for protein, as stated earlier, we live in a society that routinely ingests far more protein than we need. It is a burden for our bodies, especially the kidneys, and a prominent cause of osteoporosis. Concerning the dry cereal issue, I would suggest soy milk, rice milk or almond milk as a healthy substitute. If you're still concerned about calcium, "Westsoy" is formulated to have the same calcium concentration as milk. SUMMARY To my thinking, there is only one valid reason to drink milk or use milk products. That is just because we simply want to. Because we like it and because it has become a part of our culture. Because we have become accustomed to its taste and texture. Because we like the way it slides down our throat. Because our parents did the very best they could for us and provided milk in our earliest training and conditioning. They taught us to like it. And then probably the very best reason is ice cream! I've heard it described "to die for". I had one patient who did exactly that. He had no obvious vices. He didn't smoke or drink, he didn’t eat meat, his diet and lifestyle was nearly a perfectly health promoting one; but he had a passion. You guessed it, he loved rich ice cream. A pint of the richest would be a lean day's ration for him. On many occasions he would eat an entire quart - and yes there were some cookies and other pastries. Good ice cream deserves this after all. He seemed to be in good health despite some expected "middle age spread" when he had a devastating stroke which left him paralyzed, miserable and helpless, and he had additional strokes and d ied several years later never having left a hospital or rehabilitation unit. Was he old? I don't think so. He was in his 50s. So don't drink milk for health. I am convinced on the weight of the scientific evidence that it does not "do a body good." Inclusion of milk will only reduce your diet's nutritional value and safety. Most of the people on this planet live very healthfully without cows' milk. You can too. It will be difficult to change; we've been conditioned since childhood to think of milk as "nature's most perfect food." I'll guarantee you that it will be safe, improve your health and it won't cost anything. Free trade and chemicals on food? A study has been done a babies imbilical cord blood, testing for 413 known chemicals and a average of 200 chemicals are being detected, many of these chemicals have been banned in the USA for 30 years. But the countries we import many foods from can still use these chemicals and they do, then they ship them here and you eat them after buying them at the grocery store or a restaurant, all of these chemicals are linked to cancer or some other health problem, is this a flaw in free trade?
thanksgiving sale / tips? i never shopped on thnkxgving midnight sales in usa ! This year i hv decided to buy Baby furnitures, Cameras, etc. Please give me ideas like what stores to visit, what time is ideal for great sales, etc. Generally what shops have good deals? Thankyou.
What's my American Apparel size? Hi i'm form Italy then sorry for my bad English. I would want to buy some clothes from American Apparel online store. I'm 6'2" and 172 lbs. I'm interested to Baby Rib long sleeve raglan, California Fleece track jacket and hoody. The sizing chart of the site doesn't say anything about sleeves length. Usually i wear Medium and i like slim fit clothes. But i heard dresses from USA are bigger than Europe (American M wears like an European L). Is it true? Which size should i choose: S, M or L?
Strangers touching your belly? I am twenty six weeks pregnant with baby # 4. I have lived in Maryland for the past sixteen years (I was born in Geogia that is why my avatar is named Georgia Peach) so I have always been pregnant in Maryland with my sons who are nine, six, three, and due in May 2008. I was just interested in where in the USA or in the world you live and where you are (grocery store, the mall...) when the strangers are touching your belly. I have never had a stranger touch my stomach or ask to touch my stomach. Okay I get it now. It seems to be a thing in the UK and down south in the USA for strangers to touch pregnant stomachs. I have cousin who lives in Georgia and who is currently pregnant with her fourth boy also. I am going to ask her if strangers are always touching her stomach. I don't have a problem with family, friends, and co-workers touching my belly but at this point I would probably freak out if a stranger touched me especially since this has never happened to me before!
Book Names? I need book help! Heres some background... A highschool 7-some is the alpha-clique at this school. Each girl has a boyfriend. Each girl has 2 parents except for 2 of the girls. One of the girls has only a mom while the other has only a dad. Later in the book, they will get married. To me, it doesn't matter what 'type' of parent name you give me, as long as it isn't Kendra, Judi, William, or Jay. I need the movie titles to be 4 chick flicks and one action-packed. The entire story is based in the USA, except for a small section where on girl goes to Turks and Caicos. I'm debating this, but one girl may have twin baby girls, which is why I need those names. 7 cliquey girl names 7 cool guy names 50 or under names other characters 2 baby twin names 12 names for the parents 6 names for the siblings 8 names for teachers 2 names for store clerks 19 screen names 3 fake sodas 5 fake movie names 1 school name 9 street names 1 USA city help me as much as you can! Ok I decided on one name... Cheyenne Langley Now I only need 6 names, but you can give me more than 6 for extra help!
I'm studying on my own Differential and Integral Calculus; can I test out and receive credit? Ok, first my "puppy boy" (husband to all of you lol) is away for an extended period serving our country (USA!) and I've been staying at my mother in laws house with our baby. My mom said she would start to watch him (the baby not my husband lol) in the summer so I can return to community college to continue my studies. I managed to enroll for one semester after high school and completed College Algebra and actually tested into Calculus but decided to take it a little easy since I was pregnant. I also completed a class in Biology 1 which is a requirement for math science majors. I bought a book at Borders Book Store and in my spare time (which I have plenty of) have been studying it on its own. I NEVER in my wildest imaginings could believe how easy Calculus is. Anyway, can I test into a higher level math class such as Differential Equations, Vector Algebara, etc or do I have to go through the Calculus series?

Does this help explain why Jesus wouldn't vote for Barack Nobama? In February 2004, U.S. Senate candidate Barack Obama's wife, Michelle, sent a fund-raising letter with the "alarming news" that "right-wing politicians" had passed a law stopping doctors from stabbing half-born babies in the neck with scissors, suctioning out their brains and crushing their skulls. Michelle called partial-birth abortion "a legitimate medical procedure," and wouldn't supporters please pay $150 to attend a luncheon for her husband, who would fight against "cynical ploy[s]" to stop it? But that's not why Obama's opponent Alan Keyes said Jesus Christ wouldn't vote for him. Obama recalled Keyes' statement in a recent USA Today opinion piece but omitted his reasoning. I know his reasoning, because I was there. As a nurse at an Illinois hospital in 1999, I discovered babies were being aborted alive and shelved to die in soiled utility rooms. I discovered infanticide. Legislation was presented on the federal level and in various states called the Born Alive Infants Protection Act. It stated all live-born babies were guaranteed the same constitutional right to equal protection, whether or not they were wanted. BAIPA sailed through the U.S. Senate by unanimous vote. Even Sens. Clinton, Kennedy and Kerry agreed a mother's right to "choose" stopped at her baby's delivery. The bill also passed overwhelmingly in the House. NARAL went neutral on it. Abortion enthusiasts publicly agreed that fighting BAIPA would appear extreme. President Bush signed BAIPA into law in 2002. But in Illinois, the state version of BAIPA repeatedly failed, thanks in large part to then-state Sen. Barack Obama. It only passed in 2005, after Obama left. I testified in 2001 and 2002 before a committee of which Obama was a member. Obama articulately worried that legislation protecting live aborted babies might infringe on women's rights or abortionists' rights. Obama's clinical discourse, his lack of mercy, shocked me. I was naive back then. Obama voted against the measure, twice. It ultimately failed. In 2003, as chairman of the next Senate committee to which BAIPA was sent, Obama stopped it from even getting a hearing, shelving it to die much like babies were still being shelved to die in Illinois hospitals and abortion clinics. (As chair of that same committee, Obama once abruptly ended a hearing early, right before Scott and Janet Willis, the parents of six children killed as a result of Illinois' drivers licenses for bribes scandal, were to testify in favor of Choose Life license plate legislation. I was there for that one, too. The Willises had traveled three hours. Reporters filled the room. Obama stalled. He later killed the bill when no one was around.) So, the reason Keyes said Jesus Christ wouldn't vote for Barack Obama was because of Obama's fanatical support of abortion to the point of condoning infanticide. In his USA Today opinion piece, Obama admitted being "nagged" by the Jesus-wouldn't-vote-for-him statement, but only because he wished he'd given a different comeback. Obama insinuated opposition to abortion is based only on religion, lecturing pro-lifers like me to "explain why abortion violates some principle that is accessible to people of all faiths, including those with no faith at all." I don't recall mentioning religion when I testified against live-birth abortion. I only recall describing a live aborted baby I held in a hospital soiled utility room until he died, and a live aborted baby who was accidentally thrown into the trash. Neither do I recall religion being brought into the partial-birth abortion ban debate. I recall comparisons made to U.S. laws ensuring animals being killed are treated humanely. I recall testimony that late-term babies feel excruciating pain while being aborted. Obama stated pro-life proposals must be "amenable to reason." OK, Sen. Obama, let's reason. Explain why you support abortion for whatever rationale, at whatever gestation, by whatever means. Explain why you support infanticide, if banning it might interfere with abortion. Then, since you brought it up, explain how, despite all that, you think Jesus should vote for you, either now or in the hereafter, particularly given His statement, "It would be better to be thrown into the sea with a large millstone tied around the neck than to face the punishment in store for harming one of these little ones." Is it time to bite the bullet and realize that we are NOW in a Depression? Can we survive this? It's a complex issue and goes back through SEVERAL presidents and several Senates and Congresses. You can see ripples coming through from Reagan, Daddy Bush, Clinton, and Baby Bush. There was too much greed in the housing and stock markets. There was no oversight and people who received loans on their houses in the last 4 years should have been counseled and WARNED NOT to get a variable rate loan but the banks were under pressure from Wall Street to WRITE WRITE WRITE more loans and give Wall Street a much desired commodity on which they could make their commission portfolios rise. Don't forget about BEHIND the scenes as well. The CFR, the Fed, our leading economists, the "London Loophole", the Ruling Families, Bernanke, Paulson, and President Bush. EVERYONE had a part in this. On September 24, Bernanke started pulling OUT $225 billion dollars from the banking market, in a direct effort to cause a tightening of funds and create a panic that would FORCE Congress to pass the bail out plan and respond to President Bush's demands that Congress be forced to their knees if necessary to get this bailout passed. I realize the bail out is important and that it will cause a strangling effect on credit cards, home loans, and the economy if it is NOT passed but perhaps it's better to take our lumps NOW and get this Depression OVER as quickly as possible. Even CHINA is pushing to get this bailout passed but it is to preserve THEIR investment more than it is a fear for our economy. What we need to do is tighten our belts. The war must be stopped NOW and efforts must be made on the part of the govt to curtail ALL spending until they can balance the budget for this year. THAT will be a START! NO MORE MONEY for foreign countries ... no more money to Georgia ... no more money for ANYTHING! Bush saw the writing on the wall when everyone was SCREAMING to lower the gas prices. Had the govt made efforts to AT LEAST do THAT then the economy would have improved, the market would hold steady, food prices would have stayed firm, inflation would have been brought into check, and things would have still been tight but it would have been manageable. Bush has relied on his bullying tactics for too long. IT'S OVER MR. BUSH! You have broken the treasury. There is NO MORE MONEY FOR YOU TO STEAL! The cash cow has been drained. The Fed needs to restrict the banks. And SOMEONE needs to speak with the Rothschild family in London and get them to EASE OFF! This CRISIS, as they call it, is being MANIPULATED by the Rothschild Family just as they manipulated France during the French Revolution. Once the PEOPLE recognize that and focus on letting the MANIPULATORS know that there is NOTHING left to manipulate perhaps we can begin to work on this problem. THE USA needs to have a SUPER CLEARANCE SALE! JET AIRCRAFT ...HALF PRICE! We need to show the world that we CAN produce goods at really GOOD prices! The Tata from India gets 50 + mpg and costs $2,500. Bush wants to waste the environment and scrub all the health laws that have taken 50 years to get into place ... why not allow the Tata to be imported to the USA and sold for under $5,000 with SOME of the Federal Safety Standards but NOT all! Remember when it used to cost $2,700 to buy a new Mustang? Remember when a Corvette was $3,500? Remember when an AC Bristol Cobra with 425 horses that got 8 mpg cost $4,000 but gas was 25c/gallon? Those days are NOT gone ... they have just been shelved. WE CAN GO BACK TO THAT ! WE have the resources ... we have the factories ... we have the skills ... but we ALL need to work together. Don't buy gas unless you NEED to and then only buy enough to last for a few days. If we STOP buying fuel the prices will come down. Start buying your food at the 99c store and Food 4 Less and Save-a-lot, and Smart & Final and buy the necessities, canned food, stuff that will LAST for a YEAR OR TWO. START TO HOARD FOOD NOW! Instead of buying bottled water for 99c/gallon go to the Geyser Water Machines and buy it for 20c/gallon. When you drive your car use it ONCE a week and do ALL your errands on the same day and PLAN your route on Google so that you can make it as efficient as possible. Conserve, conserve, conserve. And above all PRAY your hearts out ... not at Church ... but every DAY at HOME. WAKE UP Praying to God ... pray to Him at lunch ... pray to Him at dinner ... THANK HIM FOR everything you have and that your family is safe and that life c My question here is: Do you people agree with me or am I just going rapidly insane here? Does anyone else see what is going on with our govt and the ruling elite and the foreign families such as the Rothschild Family, or am I being sucked in by the conspirationalists? That video above states that the TRUTH is in the Conspiracies that are being spread around? Is that propaganda to support their own issues or is it REALLY the Truth? Sorry for dumping this in the Philosophy dept but a friend suggested it and said that you guys have the finest minds on stuff like this. I was tempted to dump it in the Religion dept since I like their minds too but I have never heard from YOU guys yet and I'm curious. I know this is REALLY long but I didn't know how else to word it briefly without loosing the impetus. This took a LOT of effort so PLEASE don't violate it or report it for whatever reason and I promise I'll come in here more often and join in on YOUR discussions. Thanks :-)
