How soon after finishing breast feeding will your period return?

I was breast feeding exclusively for 6 weeks and then supplementing while pumping for an additional 4 weeks. My little one weaned herself (much to my dismay) and then eventually refused my pumped milk a few weeks ago. I have not got my period yet nor have I felt any symptoms of it coming. My husband and I have been using protection; but I'm not sure if the regular ovulation signs will even return. Can anyone help ease my mind? Thank you very much.

Public Response to How soon after finishing breast feeding will your period return?

  1. Yes, and ten times worse then before.
  2. I got my first period at 8 weeks and I exclusively breastfed but it was very short lived and if I didn't watch closely, I would have thought it was just lochia. Ovulation happens even without your periods. You know all the stories of people falling pregnant soon after delivering.
  3. Rubbish what rot FFXGames! My period returned while I was still breastfeeding and it was exactly the same. So dont stress that it will necessarily be worse.
  4. I am going through a similar experience. Began supplementing at 3 weeks and gradually weaned until fully stopping nursing at 8 weeks. That was almost 2 weeks ago and my period still has not returned but I've had pretty severe cramps every so often. I'm also on the mini pill which is taken continuously so I wonder if that might be having an effect? Glad to hear someone else is going through it also!
