Why do I get milk from my breast after my child had stopped feeding?

My child is now 18 months old and she stopped breast feeding when she was 9 months old. I did not stop giving her but she stopped it on her own. But after that till today every now and then I find milk at my breast ( if I happen to sqeeze it hard). Is this normal or is there anything abnormal I have to worry about? Is it better to visit a gynic doctor or can I relax? Can any body help me please?

  1. It will stop on it's own but if you squeeze it you make the process of stopping take longer...leave it alone. Your breast makes milk if you empty it out, leave it alone and it will stop.
  2. It's nothing to worry about. Many women never completely stop producing milk. Basically, you've activated those glands, and they always remain functional. Some women "dry up" a few months after... some never do. I stopped nursing at 17 months, and she's 21 months now... I still can express a little. :)
  3. It is completely normal, nothing to worry about. I breastfed all 4 of my kids. My youngest just turned 5 and I actually still noticed milk when he was 3. I stopped nursing when he was around 15 mos. Scary I know.....that's about 2 years later that I still had some milk. I did ask my OB-GYN and she said it was normal and would eventually go away but I could be noticing milk for many years after nursing stopped. Who knew?.
  4. Many women produce small amounts of breastmilk each cycle from puberty to menopause and never realize it. "Fibrocystic condition is the tenderness, enlargement, and/or changing lumpiness that many women encounter just before or during their menstrual periods. At this time, female hormones are preparing the breasts for pregnancy, by stimulating the milk-producing cells and storing fluid. Each breast may contain as much as three to six teaspoons of excess liquid. Swelling, with increased sensitivity or pain, may result. If pregnancy does not occur, the body reabsorbs the fluid, and the engorgement and discomfort are relieved." http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_g2603/is_0003/ai_2603000364
