Is it a good idea to try to have a baby without any health insurance?

My husband and I are wanting to have a baby and neither one of us have health insurance. My mother is worried because she is afraid that we will go in debt if we try to have a baby now without any type of insurance. I really think that her worrying has been preventing us from getting pregnant. Is there something that I can tell her, and myself, to reasure her that it's okay, that there are other options out there?

  1. Have you looked into Medicaid?
  2. Well, no I don't think it's smart to get pregnant without health insurance. My first round of bloodwork alone cost 4000 dollars! When I saw that, I was glad I had insurance! But, where do you live? I recently found out that (in PA) pregnant women qualify for state medical assistance regardless of income. So, you could look into that!
  3. it will be EXTREMELY expensive, get the help while u can. Look into medicaid or medi-cal
  4. No, it is not a good idea to not have health insurance and have a baby. You could look into medicaid, or if there are other types available to you through the state... but it is never a good idea to have a child with out medical insurance. good luck.
  5. Yes! Look to your Wic office and they will give you all the information you need. You can also look into medicaid.
  6. Many people think they can manage it without insurance. But what if you have a complicated pregnancy that results in your being on hospitalized bed rest for 3 months? Can you afford to take that risk of incurring upwards of hundreds of thousands of dollars in hospital costs? If insurance is available to you, get it. If not, look into getting maternal medicaid through your local county human services department.
  7. you can apply for meidicaid at your county office
  8. i would think that would not be a good idea try asking ur doctor or family
  9. I recently had a baby 5 months ago, I have health insurance. I can tell you about how much it costs to have one though. It cost roughly with a c-section about $20,000 that's including all of the visits to your ob prior to having your baby. it might of actually cost more. I know my surgery and hospital stay alone cost $12000. if you can afford something like that go on ahead otherwise I'd check into getting insurance privately or medicaid
  10. There are questions to be answered that have to do with money and how you would pay for things. Babies/children are expensive! It sounds like you need to find out (1) who the OB-GYN would be and how much would he/she charge you (2) what hospital you would have the baby at and what they would charge you and (3) what pediatrician you would have and what he would charge you. I haven't even mentioned clothes, medicine, equipment , furniture and possibly milk (in case you can't breastfeed). You both need to look at your finances and see if you can afford the sum total of all this. Good luck in whatever you choose!
  11. Your Mom is right. The expense just for the pregnancy is outrageous, let alone the cost of child birth, and the medical costs to keep the baby healthy. What if God forbid something was wrong with the baby, and he/she was disabled for the rest of his/her life? Then when you could get insurance in the future they might say that the baby had a pre existing condition and not cover him/her. Are you and your husband working? If so you might not qualify for Medicaid. And if your not working, then you shouldn't even be thinking about this. Having and raising a child is a huge expense. Listen to your Mom on this one, O.K.
