when should I let my 10 month old baby sleep with a blanket?

I'm a first time mommy and I let my baby sleep with a blanket during naptime when I can watch him, but am afraid to let him have it at night for fear that he might toss and turn and get it wrapped around his neck or something. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for your replies! I should have clarified that he does sleep in a sleep sack over his jammies plus it is warm in his room so there was never any danger of hypothermia:) But now that he's starting to stand up and even take a couple steps, he doesn't like the sleep sack so I thought about giving him a loose blanket. I haven't used one since birth because everything I read says not to EVER put loose blankets in with infants as this highly increases the risk of SIDS . I didn't want to take a chance. And I have read stories about babies strangling. So I was just wondering at what age other moms give their babies blankets to sleep with.

Public Response to when should I let my 10 month old baby sleep with a blanket?

  1. My daughter is 10 months old and she has slept with a blanket scense she came home from the hospital and I have not had any problem with her getting it wraped around her neck or anything. And now she has to have a certain blankie in order to sleep nap time or bedtime. I would go head and let him have a blanket but if you are realy unsure talk to the docter and see what he has to say.
  2. anytime is okay
  3. I HAVE 4 CHILDREN AND BY THE TIME THEY COULD ROLL I WAS LETTING THEM SLEEP WITH A BLANKET...IT IS COMPLETELY UP TO THE PARENT THOUGH...
  4. Anytime! My little boy has slept with a blanket since he was born...aren't you afraid of your son getting cold??? He's definitely old enough now where if it was bother him he could move it
  5. I am NOT giving advice, but at 10 months I started letting my daughter have it. She could cruise and stand alone and pull up and sit up alone. With all her mobilty I felt comfortable with doing it, I figured she could get out if it got tangled. I started at naps so I could see how she reacted and it was fine. I do make sure it isn't a little thin recieving blanket so it doesn't roll up like a rope and only put it up to her mid tummy. But it ends up all over the place or under her, or completely out of the crib! Again, not advice, do as you wish, just saying what I did.
  6. i have a ten month old son all tho he dont like haveing any blankets on i think your son is old enough now that you dont havce to worry bout it, if he does fine during the day he should do fine at night time to.he should eo moving alot now so he could get out of it if it was over isface or somthing, if you are really worried bout it just ake sur its a small baby blanket not a big blanket and it wont get wrapped around his neck
  7. I have 2 kids, 3 and 15 months old, i have always let them sleep with a blanket from birth my kids even sleep with the blanket over there head sometimes. At 10 months old your baby should already know if the blanket gets in the way your baby will move to prevent anything from happening. Besides iv never heard of a baby dieing from the blanket Being raped around there head i think your safe. If you don't feel comfortable with it get a baby monitor.
  8. You could have should have started letting him sleep covered with a blanket from the day he was born. If you are afraid of him getting suffocated or getting it aroudn the neck (which I have never heard of) then get a swaddler blanket. If your child is old enough to toss and turn then he's old enough to pull a blanket off of his face and blankets are breathable. He wouldn't have and will not suffocate, but he might catch hypothermia from lack of warmth at night.
  9. swaddle him in a balnket they should have taught you this in the hosital
  10. My son is 3 years old and he's slept with a blanket since birth and he's perfectly healthy today.
  11. Both my children have slept with a blanket since birth. They also used cloth diapers as "loveys". We've never had a problem.
  12. My daughter sleeps with a blanket has since she was born, she pulls it close to her face to comfort. I just keep a close watch on her until she falls asleep then i pull the blanket down just a bit. You could always try a crochet blanket with gaps in it to allow plenty of air flow.
