- You need to watch cats with newborns because some cats will try to go after the baby's neck to get the milk. I don't know of it happening to anyone I know but my mother-in-law told me about that.
- the hairs can irritate the babies chest and if there is a family history of asthma then i would avoid letting the cat ner baby or any of babies things.
- Plenty of people have cats and babys, hun. The only bad thing would be if the baby developed severe allergies to cat dander. I don't think having a cat actually causes these allergies.
- Well I have always had 2 cats since I was a kid. I have 3 kids and the cats never gave a problem. And I have some of the best pictures of them sleeping next to each other.
- No only if the baby has a cat allergy or asthma will the cat affect it get a net that goes over the cot though i have known storys of cats sitting on babys i think its because of the warmth sorry dont mean to freak you out. xx
- There is some evidence that exposure to cats in infancy protects against future allergies. They do NOT "go after the baby's neck to get the milk," period, and that person should be ashamed to be repeating such idiocy. We have a baby and two cats and no problems at all. Well, maybe not NO problems, but certainly none involving having both cats and babies at the same time... "Exposure to Dogs and Cats in the First Year of Life and Risk of Allergic Sensitization at 6 to 7 Years of Age JAMA. 2002;288:963-972. Context Childhood asthma is strongly associated with allergic sensitization. Studies have suggested that animal exposure during infancy reduces subsequent allergic sensitization. ... Conclusion Exposure to 2 or more dogs or cats in the first year of life may reduce subsequent risk of allergic sensitization to multiple allergens during childhood." http://jama.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/abstract/288/8/963
- Most important things are to keep the nails trimmed, the litter box impecatbly clean, make sure you cat is free from fleas and worms and watch for the developement of allergies to cat dander. My cat does try to suckle at my neck but I have never seen a cat go for a baby. It is best not to let the cat have access to the babies bedding and clothes, and I would not let the cat sleep near a newborn. A jealous cat may urinate on your or the babies things so watch for that.
- That is nothing but an old wives tale that mother in laws tell to scare the new parents and make them feel inferior! (like one person's answer) The only way baby gets allergies is if it is the genes. Most allergies are inherited. Enjoy your new baby and old cat!My first born was guarded by our cat. NO ONE outside the family touched my son! He NEVER got in the baby's face and drove my mom in law nuts because she couldn't pick up baby when she came over!
- Most likely not. There are rare cases, but they are probably resulting from undetected allergies. Research actually shows that early frequent exposure to animals results in decreased incidence of asthma and allergies.
- Having a cat shouldn't hurt anything. They can develop allergies to the dander, but there will be definite symptoms. I have a cat and 2 kids, and they are very healthy and absolutely love her.
- I have 3 cats and a 3.5 month old son. The only issue is that the cats always want attention the moment I pick up my son. I have learned how to position my boy while feeding him so the cat that wants the attention can have part of my lap as well. The only problem is when two or all three want attention at the same time. Some nights when I am giving my son his bedtime bottle I have one cat on one leg, my son on my other, one cat on the arm of the chair and the other behind my head. They don't sleep in his crib (they don't like the plastic mattress feel). I have one cat that likes to try and sleep on any clean clothes I may have left out so I don't leave his next days clothes out in the open anymore. The other one prefers the dirty clothes so I don't worry about that. Any other baby stuff they get into I just squirt water on them and they have quickly learnt they are not allowed in there. What's really cute is that my boy has just started to take notice of the cats and will follow them with his eyes and occasionally try to reach out for them. Shall be interesting to see what kind of relationships develop between him and the cats. There is no risk of just owning a cat posing a health hazard to the baby. Later, if he gets scratched by a cat that goes outside he may get Cat Scratch Fever (I had it as a child) but it's generally not life threatening. You also want to make sure the cats have their shots and are dewormed and keep the claws trimmed. Other than that, love them both!
- I have cats and a bab y and there was never a problem.
