At what age did you start feeding your baby cereal and baby food?

I am curious. My baby is 14 weeks old, and some people are telling me that I should have started her on food by now. I remember my doctor saying 4 months. When did you start, and when should you start?

Public Response to At what age did you start feeding your baby cereal and baby food?

  1. 1 week before 4 months and it was doctor recommended because my baby was ready for solids.
  2. A lot of doctors say 6 months. I started mine at 3 months with the cereal. He was almost 4 months before I moved on to veggies. Most babies have the thrush reflex until about 4-5 months. That means they will just push the food out. You can always try and if he/she doesn't eat try again in a few weeks.
  3. 14 weeks?? that is only 3 1/2 months... They technically say that a child should be sitting up before they start solids.. but.. mine were only kind of sitting up.. They started eating solids 6 months old.. I felt there was no nutritional value to give them food earlier... Good luck!
  4. 5 weeks and everybody can kiss my a$$. My baby
  5. I started my fist 2 on cereal at 2 months, my youngest didn't get cereal until he was 4 months, it depends on the child...Your his mom and you know what he needs. If he is satisfied with just milk then that's all he needs! Good Luck
  6. I tried the cereal with my daughter at 3 months because it wasn't the formula wasn't satisfying her and she pushed it all out so I just made it thicker and she had no problem with it.
  7. My baby's pediatrician suggested waiting until my baby was 6 months, so I waited until he was 6.5 months. It messed up his entire feeding schedule though.
  8. When I was a baby, it was recommended they start at 8 weeks. When my kids were babies (not that long ago actually) it was recommended to start rice cereal at 4 months and baby food at 6 months. Now I hear that you're supposed to hold off on all baby foods until 6 months of age. I'd just go by what your doctor and your instincts tell you. Your baby is very young and she doesn't need baby food yet - unless her doctor states otherwise.
  9. The age of baby is not really important, what is important is that they are showing all the signs of readiness - sitting up well with very little support - no tongue thrust reflex that pushes solids out of the mouth - intense interest in food ie reaching for food and crying when others are eating - still hungry after 8-10 good milk feedings a day Once baby is showing all of these signs of readiness you can start with thin single grain cereal or single fruits or low nitrate veggies. go with rice for sure if there is a history of allergies in the family. babies are usually ready for solids between 4 and 6 months, most are ready closer to 6 months. My oldest was 4 months exactly when I started him on cereal and my daughter was just shy of 4 months, but was sitting alone and drinking 40-60 oz of breast milk a day (we found out how much when she spent the night at Grandma's - no wonder I was so tired)
  10. Pediatricians strongly recommend that you wait now until 6 months of age when the baby's digestive systems are able to handle solid foods. I did wait until my daughter was 6 months when I started her on rice cereal. She had been watching us eat and was very eager to start. I mixed breast milk with the rice cereal and made it really runny at first for about a 4 days and gradually made it thicker. After two weeks, I gave her oatmeal cereal. After a week of oatmeal, I mixed in some apple sauce (pureed apples, not store bought applesauce). Then after a week, butternut squash and after a couple of weeks, peas. When you introduce a new food to your baby, you should wait at least 4 days to see if there is an allergic reaction. Don't feel you need to rush your baby into eating solid foods. They need to be able to support themselves sitting and be interested in eating.
  11. It depends on when your baby is ready. It is recommended you wait until 4-6 months. Babies are getting all the nutrients they need from formula or breastmilk at that time. The longer you hold off on solids decreases the chance of your baby getting food allergies and they are able to digest it properly. I waited until my son was 8 months before introducing any solids. He has always been in the top weight and height for his age.
  12. i started my daughter on a feeder with fruits at 5 weeks. some cerel as well. we dont do this everyday, just a few days out of the week. she takes very well to it. her tummy doesnt hurt, her bowels are normal, and she isnt spitting/throwing up.
  13. 4 months is the absolute earliest, but more and more doctors are now recommending 6 months. Especially if your baby is breastfed, 6 months is a better choice. Don't listen to people telling you to give a 3 month old solids. She is too young and introducing solids too early can cause food allergies. At my son's 4 month well check this morning the doctor told me I may want to consider starting solids since my son is a big boy and may be needing more than breastmilk, but I will wait until he shows me that. Ideally, I would like to wait until 6 months. There's no rush with solids, rice cereal is really just to get your baby used to eating off of a spoon anyway.
  14. 5 months.
  15. shouldn't start baby cereal till 4-6 months. i started my baby on single grain rice cereal at 4 months and just yesterday she turned 5 months so we started the baby gerber oatmeal and she loves it! next month when she turns 6 months we will try baby food. they say to start on the single grain rice first. and when you do finally start baby food do one food a week to make sure no allergies. i give my baby the cereal once a day in the afternoon. they say not to put it in the bottle either, spoon feed it only. although i have to say i have put it in the bottle a couple of times.
  16. you will know when your baby will be ready when he or she takes a strong interest in food, like if your eating in front of the baby and you notice he or she smacking her lips and staring you down it doesnt hurt to give her a bite and see if he or she will eat it and want more. also if your baby drinks more than a full bottle of milk and seems to be still pretty hungry. start out by making the baby cereal thin and runny, if too thick you can make he or she constipated. there is no real age of when your baby is ready, just pay attention to the signs of food interest.
  17. I started introducing the 'notion' of food to my baby at 4 months of age. I did this with rice cereal mixed with breast milk. This seemed to cause constipation so I switched mashed banana and avocado. Only a tsp a day! Now he is 5 months and 1 week and having three meals a day of about a tbsp each feed. My main concern was getting to the six month mark and him not taking well to solids - at this age breast milk no longer contains all the nutrients baby needs and their iron stores (built up while in the womb) run out. That's why I chose to begin prior to this - just to be sure! He actually took to solids very well - at 4 months he knew exactly what to do - no pushing food out with his tongue. I still breast feed him before each meal - his milk intake has not decreases. This was important for me. Every one has different ideas. Just monitor your baby and give tiny amounts of solids at a time. Banana and avocado was recommended to me by a nurse as they don't take much to digest and are packed with nutrients. Good luck :)
