When to add baby to health insurance?

I am 11 weeks pregnant.. ways to go yet but I am just curious... When are we supposed to add the baby to our insurance? Before he or she is born so they are covered in the hospital? Or the day their born or after? How does that work?

Public Response to When to add baby to health insurance?

  1. With my medical insurance, we have 30 days after he is born to add him to our insurance policy plan. He is covered under my insurance until we are out of the hospital and 30 days of his birth.
  2. there was a rep from our health insurance who came to see me in the hospital, i signed a form and she was covered from then (about 2 or 3 days old).
  3. Before the baby is born you need to contact the insurance company. Let them know there will be a little one added. Then, I believe, they contact the insurance from the hospital.
  4. I've always sent th e proof of pregnancy to my insurance as soon as I received it. I wanted to make sure my prenatal visits were all covered and everything too. I don't know what kind of insurance you have or their rules so you may want to call them and ask their policies.
  5. depends on your INS. with my husbands he sent all of our first babies info he could, like her name where we lived ect. and soon as she was born she was covered. so call your INS company and see what they say. it should be as easy as letting them know you are expecting, what your due date is and what info they will need and your babe should be covered the minute he/she is out! :)
  6. We called our insurance provider as soon as he was born. They wouldn't add him "officially" until we received his Social Security number, but once we did, he was covered retroactively to the day he was born. Most policies will give you 30 days to request to add your LO on. Every insurance company is probably going to be different - your best bet is to call and see what they'll require from you.
  7. yes i am with kate...my insurance company had my son covered up untl 30 days automatically....but what my husand did was give hs workall the info tey needed and when the baby was born it was just a click of a button and the baby was added
  8. i called my insurence company the day my daughter was born but i didnt get the insurenc untill she was a month old.. so do it as soon as the babys born
  9. This is really a question to ask your health insurance company (or your HR department) to see how it works for YOUR insurance. But generally speaking, you can not add a child until AFTER they are born, and you generally have a brief period of time (two weeks, 30 days, etc) in which to add them to insurance, and once added within that window of time, the insurance will be retroactive to their birth date.
  10. we have 90 days. it depends on your insurance, call them you have a time limit
