Does a baby's fathers health insurance cover the pregnant mothers expenses?
I am 18 years old, and about 7 weeks pregnant. I do not have health insurance but my boyfriend, the father of the baby, does have health insurance. Is there any way or is it possible that his health insurance covers the baby's expenses (doctors appts., hospital delivery, etc.) or will I just have to file for my own health insurance?

- Get married and you can.
- The only way is if you get married...
- He can add the baby to his policy when the baby is born. You will have to either be added to his policy or get one of your own for it to cover your prenatal care and your hospital expenses. Your best bet may be to look into maternity medicaid. It is different than regular medicaid and most uninsured women wil qualify for it.
- Most likely NOT. The insurance will cover the baby when s/he is born, but not you now. Many places do an "open enrollment" for insurance around this time. Is the father's company one of them? Can he add YOU on to the insurance, at least for a year? Insurance companies can pick and choose to not cover "existing conditions" such as pregnancy. So you should get yourself covered ASAP.
- You will have to get your own insurance to pay for the prenatal visits, tests and delivery. He can put the baby on his insurance once the baby is born. Normally the mom would have insurance and when the baby is born they are under the mother's insurance for the first month and then they have to be added to your policy.
- Not all insurances cover the family members of the boyfriend or husband. My fiances has health insurance through his work but it only covers him, no one else and thus i had to find a separate insurance company to help me out while pregnant and to cover my son. If you do not have health insurance the state can help you provide a pregnancy insurance that is good up until the child's first 2-3 months of life and that's it. I suggest looking more into your boyfriends policy and finding out what all it covers because it could be like my fiances. Good luck!
- Some insurance companies allow you to add someone you live with and aren't married to. He needs to talk to his HR manager or insurance company and find out what their policy is, but you need to be covered in order for the delivery and doctor visits to be covered, whether that's on his insurance or separately. Be aware that many insurance companies will not cover your pregnancy costs if you sign up when you're already pregnant. It qualifies as a pre-existing condition. There are also state programs for low-income pregnant women, and most areas have pro-life clinics that can help you. Go do some research! And congratulations!!
