How do you can homeade baby food?

We have a bunch of baby food made up, but the only storage we have found is freezing it. We are trying to figure out how to can it in jars for shelf storage.

  1. The Ball Canning Company has a consumer website that answers all food canning/jarring questions. Try this link: http://www.homecanning.com/
  2. Actually, freezing it in "ice cube" trays first and then wrap them individually in glad wrap, put in big ziplock, return to freezer. You can use only what you need and is a whole lot less work than trying to can it. Each cube is about serving size for quite awhile. Good luck.
  3. Hello! Homemade baby food is a great idea, most homemade baby foods contain more nutrients anyhow. There are no added fillers and artificial ingredients. Commercial baby foods are convenient and safe, but they often contain more water, starch, and sugar than homemade ones. The addition of these additives dilute the nutrient content of the food I have found that freezing is the best way unless you have one of those air vacuuming systems that can seal them tight for self storage. I do have some helpful tips for freezing babyfoood, I hope that helps you... *Homemade Baby Food Tips and Hints - Do's* • Do use ice cube trays to freeze puréed foods. Each cube should be about one ounce. Once frozen, pop out the cubes, store in a sealed plastic bag, and use within two months. • Do discard unfinished meals. Bacteria forms quickly. • Do introduce new foods at the rate of one per week, so you can pinpoint any allergies. • Do make sure your child has accepted most vegetables and fruits before trying any meats. • Do steam or microwave vegetables and fruits to retain as much vitamins and minerals as possible, as opposed to boiling. • Do use as thinners: water left from steaming, breast milk, formula, cow's milk, yogurt, broth, or apple juice. • Do use as thickeners: wheat germ, whole-grain cereal, cottage cheese, farmer cheese, cooked egg yolks, yogurt, mashed white or sweet potato. HOPE THAT HELPS YOU! GOOD LUCK!
  4. I never made up a bunch at one time. I just didn't season any foods until I had taken the baby's portion out of the regular batch of foods. I tossed her portion in the blender, then in her plate. Hers was always as fresh as ours.
  5. Why bother, just make it from your leftovers daily in a blender, meat, starch, vegetables all together.
